This PPT was developed by Alex Wolfe, TurnItIn Adapted by HSA Administration to fit the needs of HSA students Essential Questions: What is turnitin.com? How does turnitin.com work? How will I be using it in my classes?

2 What is turnitin.com? An online program that we will be using at H.S.A to turn in our papers, PPT, lab reports, projects, etc. Website: Turnitin helps students to double check their work for unoriginal writing and helps to prevent plagiarism Plagiarism is taking ideas, writing, or phrases from other sources and offering them as your own. Cutting or pasting ideas into a document from electronic sources is both unethical and illegal. When using someone else’s work, be sure that that the author is given credit (use footnotes, citations, and/or bibliography)

3 Turnitin’s Purpose The purpose of Turnitin is to enhance a student’s learning of research and writing skills while allowing faculty more time to concentrate on teaching. Specifically: To make it easier and more efficient to evaluate student work To deter plagiarism To hold students accountable To determine the similarity of text to sources To enhance teaching and student learning

4 How does it work?  Digital Submission
Students submit papers digitally (online) through the TurnItIn application (

5 How does it help reduce plagiarism?  Extensive Search
TurnItIn searches a number of sources for matches: A current and archived copy of the publicly accessible Internet (more than 13 billion Web pages are searched for unoriginal work) 2. Thousands of newspapers, magazines, books, and scholarly journals More than 130 million student papers previously submitted to Turnitin since 1996 Turn-it-in will also compare papers from students in the same classes at H.S.A

6 How will you know if work ins not original?  Originality Report
TurnItIn will show a color-coded Report to the students or the instructor. A percentage shows how much of your paper might match another source.

7 What are the next steps? Your teachers will be setting up your classes and provide directions on how to turn in your papers moving forward. It is important that as you begin your papers, projects, lab reports, etc. you get the help you need with proper citations in order to avoid creating unoriginal work.
