The first "web managed" or "smart switches" were introduced in Web managed switches offer customers some fundamental network configuration and management capabilities via a web interface. Web managed switches are primarily sold to customers that purchase and use unmanaged switches. They are also sold to customers who want some of the functionalities offered by the managed switches but with no management complexities. The Web-managed switches have had a strong growth in the last few years. Web managed devices and Gigabit are the two pockets of growth within the relatively flat unmanaged market. In 2009 the unmanaged Gigabit market is projected to be 58495K ports, according to Dell Oro Group and Industry analysts estimate that 40% of those ports will be web managed or smart switches.
