Engaging Community Members in the Research Process Amy Leader Associate Professor Medical Oncology Thomas Jefferson University

2 What is Community Based Participatory Research?
Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a partnership approach to research that equitably involves, for example, community members, organizational representatives, and researchers in all aspects of the research process and in which all partners contribute expertise and share decision making and ownership.

3 Tenets of Community Based Research
Promotes collaborative and equitable partnerships in all research phases and involves an empowering and power-sharing process. Recognizes community as a unit of identity. Builds on strengths and resources within the community.   Facilitates co-learning and capacity building among all partners.  Focuses on problems of relevance to the local community using an ecological approach that attends to multiple determinants of health and disease. Balances research and action for the mutual benefit of all partners. Disseminates findings and knowledge gained to the broader community and involves all partners in the dissemination process.  Ensures a long-term process and commitment to sustainability.

5 HUMAN RESEARCH PROTECTIONS TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Those engaged in research are required to complete training in the protection of human subjects. Training requirements can be met by completing the CITI Program or the Community Partner Training Program. The CITI Program Used by many universities Requires university affiliation to access Assumes background knowledge on research The Community Partner Training Program Meets training requirements for the responsible conduct of human research Is tailored to unique issues that community research partners may encounter Explains the special rules for human research (what they are and why they exist) and your important role on the research team Ensures all members of the research team understand the rules for human research and treat research participants fairly
