Students’ perceptions on the Students-Based Orientations in comparison with the traditional orientations by doctors at the Arabian Gulf University SALEH BUBISHATE 6TH YEAR MEDICAL STUDENT ARABIAN GULF UNIVERSITY - BAHRAIN

Introduction As a part of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) medical curriculum at the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain, Coordinators of each unit present an orientation in the beginning of each unit.

The coordinator’s lecture
Speaks “briefly” about the unit: The numbers of the problems Resource persons Exam dates etc

We observed The attendance is very weak Why? The lecture?
Past experience? Useless? The beginning of the unit?

We observed Just in same week, those who attended & didn’t attend, all of them seek for seniors students advises !! Why? More practical / applicable? More reliable? Confidence? Variety of students with different levels & grades?

We have to try ! In the last year, “The Guidance & Counselling Committee (GCC)” a new committee in the AGU student council was established by me. Three main targets: Orientations lectures  Students-Based Orientations (SBO) Advisors “your 2nd research” Educative sessions “youtube”

We called for help So, we started the Students-Based Orientations (SBO) by senior medical students. For the following units: Year 2: unit 2 & 3 By : Moh’d Wael & Fajjer Alammadi Year 3: unit 5 & 6 and the research: By : Aysha Khonji , Fatema Khonji & Faisal Shuaib Year 4: unit 8 & 9 & BSc: By : Saleh Bubishate

Literature review From a review of the current literature, there seems to be a lack of research in this area [1], however, there was a study comparing audiovisual sessions done by both students & doctors which showed that there was a strong positive correlation was found between the benefits teachers and students [2]. Open the links

Aim of the study The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of SBO at the Arabian Gulf University using a questionnaire.

This was a cross-sectional study, carried out on 133 AGU medical students from Year 2 to Year 4. A 13 question Self-administrated questionnaires was prepared in English and was distributed to AGU students from Year 2 to Year 4

It seems that there is some benefits from the SBO program which may be considered as a part of the curriculum system in the PBL in the AGU. However, further studies are required to test the generalizability and validity of assessment using this tool. The benefits of this study are that the AGU administration will possibly review the present academic advisory system and that this important student feedback will be valued and improvements undertaken.
