2. WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY ASSISTED LEARNING?
TAL brings CII education material directly to your desk top via an effective and highly interactive software program that can be accessed at any time and at any location anywhere in the world. The programming provides leading edge graphics and learning presentation that not only results in effective learning, it is also enjoyable to use. Unlike old style computer based training that merely reproduced text, TAL presents a wide array of different screens and requires student interaction to reveal the information.

4. TAL ORIGIN Listened to Customer Out of the Box Thinking
TAL at CII is the product of the Technology Assisted Learning Research Team, RT157 which was jointly sponsored by the CII Research Committee and the CII Education Committee to evaluate technology based training trends in the industry and to explore the potential for utilization at CII. Education Committee Surveys in 1995 and 1997 identified strong member company interest in computer based training. As a result of “listening to the customer” and employing some “out of the box” thinking, the Education Committee organized it’s first Research Team. The research team followed up with more detailed surveys of interested member companies and surveyed the technology based training industry for best practices and delivery systems

6. TEAM FINDINGS Move to Technology Delivered Training
Infrastructure Already in Place
CII Must Add Capability
We found that most CII member companies were already using intra/internet communication and the infrastructure was already in place to support TAL delivery. In addition to finding an existing technical infrastructure, we also determined that there were no major policy or administrative barriers that would interfere with the use of Internet based training.
The Internet is becoming, if not already, the major conduit for delivering information of all types and we are all becoming comfortable with its use. CII must expand beyond offering only print based education material if it is going to remain a reliable source of information on construction best practices. Prior to TAL, any CII training was delivered by in-house instruction using the training modules or at the three campus hubs. Now TAL provides another avenue to deliver pre-work for the traditional training programs, complete training on selected subjects or for overview training for those not requiring in-depth training. TAL supports and expands present CII training modes and many of the existing education modules are easily convertible to TAL modules.
