SINGLE mum Nikki Halliwell is disgusted by the interest rates charged by hire-purchase stores such as BrightHouse.
Nikki, 31, of Darlington, County Durham, says: "I've got a washing machine, tumble-dryer, PC monitor and sofa on hire purchase from BrightHouse.
"I'm a full-time mum and can't buy these things outright.
"I was paying £18.50 a week, but a few months ago I decided to stop paying the service charge and that brought it down to £14.50.
"The interest is 29.9 APR.
"The washing machine alone costs me £5 a week and by the time I've finished paying it works out at over £700.
"You can get one like that for half that price from somewhere like Comet but they won't give me credit.
"BrightHouse will take me on without a credit check - but they charge you."
