2 3300 B.C. A Barter Economy Turns to Tokens
People would barter- trade one thing for another. Instead of dragging your sheep around all day, people created tokens. Token represented what you wanted to trade. But as trade increased, people might have different tokens in different areas.

3 Your task! They may not even speak the same language!
Prepare tokens to represent the items in the boxed list. Each token should tell the other merchant exactly what the item is. CANNOT use: Words Letters Numbers You and your group members are merchants in Mesopotamia. You want to go to the city of Ur to trade. You want to use tokens, but you know you may be trading with merchants who may not use the same tokens as you.

4 TRADING IS ON! Now you will meet traders from another city.
Unfortunately, you don’t speak their language. The entire trade must be done in silence! To simplify things, you are going to just trade: Bricks for bricks Carts for carts Etc. Challenge: How do you know which of their tokens stand for the same items as yours?

Tokens made it hard for people to understand what items were and the amount. How do you think this lead to the development of money? People realized that a standard set of “tokens” used by everyone could represent value, instead of objects. Instead of just trading “stuff” we could “sell” items by how valuable they are.

9 A Dedication to Mesopotamian Achievements Project
In ancient Mesopotamia, rulers recorded their most important achievements on steles. A stele is a stone slab on which an illustration or inscription has been carved. In this project, you and your assigned partner will decide on one Mesopotamian achievement to research, draw, and write about on a stele.
