10 No Place for Hate So hopefully you are thinking, this sounds great but what do I have to do? Want to acknowledge and honor all the things on your plate as teachers and administrators. Our hope is that NPFH does not create extra work, but rather works itself once you get your team (students, family members etc) involved and they can run with it. Empower them! GO TO GOOGLE DOCS: Show Committee Form (now that they have developed/are developing) to complete….Melia will send this form by END OF WEEK to all participating schools. Anti-Defamation League

11 No Place for Hate BUILD inclusive and safe communities in which respect is the goal, and all students can thrive RECOGNIZE dedication and efforts in place to making a school “No Place for Hate.” At the ADL, we are called all the time about incidents in schools that are not going well. With NPFH we wanted to find schools that are doing the right thing and in our own way recognize and reward that. Your administration will really like that part. Side note: having this program on your campus of course cannot guarantee that the school year will be incident-free. But it demonstrates the school’s willingness to try to create an inclusive environment. Furthermore, you’re laying the groundwork for a future of anti-bias education both in school and on a personal level for each student here. Anti-Defamation League

12 Rationale School Safety/Discipline
Workplace Readiness in a Global Society Teacher/Staff Morale Academic Achievement We know that school culture and climate are absolutely connected to academic achievement. Creating a positive culture has a positive impact on teacher morale. In the state of CA, a veteran teacher is now a teacher that has been teaching 3-5 years. The reason teachers cite most often for leaving teaching- not about content, but about behavior of students School Safety/Discipline An overwhelming majority of students (83% of girls and 79% of boys) report regularly experiencing harassment at school, and 10,000 children stay home from school at least once month due to the fear of being bullied NPFH Principal REPORTED: 50% drop in discipline referral rate 58% drop in Out of School suspension 26% drop in In-school Suspensions ADL can’t promise these numbers….its the school that really does the work! Workplace Readiness in a Global/Pluralistic Society The skills learned through diversity education include many of these “soft skills”: communication, cross-cultural competency, critical thinking, conflict management, and problem-solving. Diversity education programs can also develop leadership skills, fostering responsible citizenship and the promotion of democratic values. Teacher/Staff Morale Teacher and staff performance improves in an inclusive, collaborative, and respectful work environment. Morale greatly improves when educators are able to focus more on teaching and less on discipline and classroom management. An overall school culture of respect creates a more welcoming environment for families and can contribute to greater parental involvement. Academic Achievement: LAST b/c when all other pieces are on place….better place to learn! Diversity education programs correlate with many Education Standards, our benchmarks for core academic learning requirements. Name-calling, teasing, and bullying disrupt classroom teaching in general and the emotional impact on targets increases absenteeism and ability to focus in the classroom. Anti-Defamation League

13 +/- Climate vs. Culture Active/Passive School Culture =
What we do (consciously or not) that creates that feeling Active/Passive School Climate = How a school “feels” (subjective experience) +/- Approaches that simply crack down on individual aggressors are seldom effective. However, when there is a school-wide or organization-wide commitment to end bias and bullying, these behaviors can be reduced significantly. Anti-Defamation League

14 Core Components Student Leadership (Peer Education)
Culturally Relevant Address Diversity/Bias-based Bullying Community-Wide Approach From Bystander to Ally Culture Change (long term) As you are implementing the steps, it’s important to think about these things HOW? Student Leadership (Peer Education): Cooperative Learning/Empathy Development/Critical Thinking Community-Wide Approach: Other community orgs work fit within NPFH?? From Bystander to Ally Culture Change (long term)- REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS-programs killed by unrealistic expectations. CHANGE IS A PROCESS (2-3 year sweet spot) Some of the changes renewal schools are experiences – ADL improving its evaluation – both of our PROCESS for you. As we all IMPACT overall. Anecdotal, versus data Anti-Defamation League

15 Step 1: Form your Team This is not a “program” that has to SQUEEZE into already busy calendars, schedules and priorities. But rather an Initiative that works seamlessly with what you already have in place….and then what your committee wants to focus on. Student leadership knows what will work at your school. They’ll tell you what is and is not COOL. and that is crucial for those voices to be integrated into the activities for a successful campaign. This gives the Student Body a voice for declaring this is WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE WANT Make sure you have student leadership ASSESSMENT: Internal Team determines what is our current culture/climate. What changes do we want to see? Should involve teachers and other staff BONUS: administrators, family members, community and business leaders This can be a group already established: Student Council, Culture and Diversity Committee, etc. OR BRAND NEW-untapped students Anti-Defamation League

16 Step 2: Sign the Pledge Kick-off/ Launch at each school. Generate excitement, curiosity and “signed” commitment. One school’s kick-off: was for a full week: mini-activities all week long, morning announcements Resolution of Respect/Promise of Respect for High/Middle and Elem respectively (adjustments in the language) Kick-off events—whole school outside reciting pledge (don’t think this will go over so well in junior high/high school-can e leave off) School-wide assembly: Pledge on the wall….sign as you go past Individual Resolutions posted in each Home Room Sample of the Pre-K signed No Place For Hate® promise-Hand Prints Anti-Defamation League

17 Step 3: Conduct Three Activities in a Year
MELIA Planned and the Run by the Team/Coalition/Committee: Based on NEEDS ASSESSMENT I am sure your schools are already doing some great Anti-Bias or Diversity work. No Place for Hate is an umbrella under which all your good work gets amplified. Simple adjustments or re-framing of programs already being done can make these activities qualify as NO PLACE FOR HATE ACTIVITES: MLK Day programming Multi-cultural Days or Pot-luck meals Anti-bullying Month activities in October Student Contests: ART, MUSIC, WRITING But if you still want more…..ADL offers suggestions: Our service to you. STUDENT INPUT COMES BACK INTO PLAY! What is really going to work for them! EDUCATOR INPUT…how can this tie back into our curriculum. WE CAN HELP! Anti-Defamation League

18 Multi-cultural activities
In this slide each child made a quilt square representing their cultural background and heritage. Someone amazingly artistic managed to put it all together A lot of schools will do something for Black History month, or Women’s History month but the connections are often not made between the two-recognition and respect for differences, not bullying. With NPFH the kids have a over-arching framework and can be encouraged to make the connections GO TO PINTEREST SITE TO SHOW HOW SOME RESOURCES ARE CLUSTERED FOR VARIOUS TOPICS/MONTHS etc Anti-Defamation League

19 Identity Activities Black History Month Example…each grade feature a peformances- regionalized adapeted I Have a Dream Speech. Here the whole school did an activity and then put it up “I am unique” Alternative: One thing I like, one thing I am good at Did you pay someone a compliment today? If you really knew me…. -ARTS -WRITING -SCIENCE: What makes us the same and different? Biology? -Math-work on statistics lessons of demographics, etc Social Studies Kids love making videos and doing art- you can make that happen on these themes Put their artistic skills to use by designing No Place For Hate® t-shirts and posters, creating an anti-bullying mural, wring and performing anti-bullying songs, and creating the winning entries for anti-bullying poetry and essay contests Created PSAs addressing bullying and prejudice—many of which have been viewed by schools across the county Anti-Defamation League 19

20 Theme weeks/months NOTE: The week or the month would be considered ONE activity. Not multi-activities condensed into one week as NPFH E.G.: Unstoppable Positive Power Week…..the activity was a week long program. This school did a lot of pre-work before the actual day. They created suggestions of questions to ask one’s new lunch partner and created a format of topics to talk about that encouraged sharing M.A.R.C.H Madness month (Motivation, Acceptance, Respect, Compassion, and Healing). The month was dedicated to activities that aimed to “STOP the Madness” associated with acts of intolerance and bullying. There were many activities planned during these respective weeks, such as Poetry readings, a dance sponsored by students united against bullying, and art contests among many others Anti-Defamation League 20

21 Step 4: Recognition! After the 3 activities have been completed (3 is the MINIMUM BTW….can always do more!) ADL will Designate each school as No Place for Hate. They are awarded a Banner…. Public Announcement. Celebration. School Assembly, “Dedication of Banner” Where to hang it in the school. Balloons! This is BIG DEAL! 5 Years of NPFH they get a special 5 year Gold Star Banner Cake-That’s my kind of school! THEN WHAT!? and may CHOOSE to continue year after year! Results really start to show in YEAR 3 With each year, expand and improve on activities, adjust the message as needs evolve, fortify commitment In Atlanta: 100% of schools participating in No Place for Hate wanted to renew the following year….Elem/Mid/High Anti-Defamation League
