3 Labor Unions Many workers in factories started as friendly societies
Working area not equipped to workers needs Dangerous working conditions Low wages Long hours/ no breaks Unsanitary Workers created strikes Collective bargaining

4 Child Labor Laws Societies Response to the Problem:
Child Labor Laws- Full time employment under a minimum legal age. Problem: Children like this sometimes worked 19 hours a day. Injuries and deaths were common in the workplace They got little pay Punishment was cruel Societies Response to the Problem: Factory Act was Passed in Britain in It stated that it was illegal to hire a child under the age of 9, and that children ages couldn’t work more than 8 hours. Young people from the ages of couldn’t work more than 12 hours. They also passed the mines act of 1832 which prevented women and children from working under ground. The U.S. created the childrens buro in 1912 monitor child labor.

5 Capitalism Thomas Malthus
Definition: An economic system in which money is invested in business ventures with the goal of making a profit Response: Capitalism was founded off of Thomas Malthus and David Ricardo’s ideas on economy Supporters of capitalism opposed government efforts to help poor workers Poor people were unhappy because if the government would pay less attention to their needs Problem: Business leaders wanted government to stay out of business The government wanted to make sure the poor people’s economic status improved

6 Socialism/Communism Socialism: economic policy in between communism and capitalism Charles Fourier and Saint- Simon Communism: all means of production are owned by the people, private property doesn’t exist, and all goods and services are shared equally Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels Poor living/working conditions created by industrialization led to new philosophies on economic systems

7 Middle Class A social class of middle workers
professionals, business people, and wealthy farmers made up of wealth in factory owners, shippers, merchants Neither rich nor poor upper middle class gov. employees, doctors lawyers and managers of factories lower middle class factory overseers, toolmakers, mechanical drafters and printers problem: had wealth, wield power, greater gap between rich and poor Source: Modern World History Textbook
