2 Distribution of Cases Reported in Mainland by Epidemiological Weeks from 2015 - 2017

3 Updates as at January 10, 2016 Mainland: 19 cases reported from Morogoro, Dodoma and Dar es Salaam Districts reported cases: Kilosa (8); Kongwa DC (10); and Kinondoni (1) (*these are some of the hotspots districts. Others are Mpwapwa, Mpanda DC, Morogoro MC, Dondoma MC, Dar es Salaam – Illala, Ubungo) Zanzibar: Reported zero suspected cholera cases for past 24 weeks Cumulative: Mainland: 24,267 cases and 374 deaths (CFR 1.5%) Zanzibar: 4330 cases and 68 deaths (CFR 1.6%)

4 Current Issues Lack or late reporting by districts (weak surveillance)
Weak multi-sectoral collaboration, all levels, especially involving the water sector Lack of access to safe water (inadequate supply) and poor sanitation Mobilise towards improving sanitation and hygiene to curb transmission. Limited resources for cholera response at all levels Some deaths at CTC and at the community

5 Response activities 1 PO-RALG, MOH, and hotspots regions and districts weekly teleconference Inter-ministerial and Regional Response Assessment of cholera outbreak in Morogoro: to develop short, mid - and long-term action points MoH letter to be sent through PO-RALG to address the following: Critical to promptly report and to strengthen surveillance Regions and districts to be accountable for delayed/not reporting To advocate for a PHC meeting in Dar es Salaam Distribution of ORS and aqua tablets to hotspot locations Prevention of deaths Re-orientation on case management ORS corners in communities (hotspots) Mentoring of CTC staff

6 Response activities 2 Surveillance meetings (SOPs, ToRs, Training manuals, IDSR Focal points) (latest meeting January 9 – in Dodoma) Plan to conduct a review: general objective: Lessons learned, SWOT, and recommendations Vulnerability and risk assessment mapping with a climate change component

7 Aflatoxicosis Situation Updates & Response WHO Country Office, Tanzania January 11, 2017

8 Aflatoxicosis status as of January 8, 2017
One new case of suspected aflatoxicosis was reported on 30th December 2016 The case is 10 year male from Kondoa DC The patient is admitted at Kondoa DH. Bed state: 1 Cumulative: 69 cases and 20 deaths with a CFR 28.99%

Coordination of responses is slow and not clear Aflatoxicosis expertise Activities Aflatoxicosis health sector response plan being developed (WHO, MOH)

10 Zika virus disease Situation Updates & Response WHO Country Office, Tanzania January 11, 2017

11 Background December 16: BBC Swahili-language service report: based on findings of a survey by NIRM. Results: 11.0% (48 of 435 ) tested positive for Zika virus. No Dengue or Chikungunya. A second study on neonates with congenital anomalies (Weil Bugando school of Medicine): Results: 43% (35 of 80) were positive for Zika virus infection.

12 Zika virus disease Transmission: bite of an infected mosquito, primarily Aedes aegypti First identified in 1947 in rhesus monkeys in the Zika forest in Uganda First identified in humans in 1952 in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania Outbreak for the first time in the Pacific in 2007 and 2013 in Yap and French Polynesia, respectively In Africa, Cape Verde outbreak with over 7000 cases from October 2015 to January Guinea-Bissau 4 cases.

13 Zika virus disease in Tanzania: Status and Actions
Situation: No Zika disease outbreak Evidence of Zika virus infections (the two studies) Proposed actions (not finalized with the government ) finalize draft National Preparedness and Response plan on ZIKA Virus Disease Conduct a prevalence survey, including of the vector Risk communication
