Harlem is located in the the Northern part of NYC

In the 50s Harlem was the scene of many rent strikes by Harlem tenants, led by local activist Jessie Gray
Residents of Harlem were extremely poor
Unemployment rates were through the roof.

Although Jim Crow laws were enacted largely in the South, they affected African Americans standard of living nationally.
Jim Crow laws were discriminatory laws that made segregation and the unfair treatment of African Americans lawful.

the absorption and integration of people, ideas, or culture into a wider society or culture.

6. Character Analysis
Berneatha embodies the feminist, but she has this inward struggle to connect to her roots as an African American, but she also seem to want to assimilate to advance in society.
Asagai represents the prototype of someone who knows who he is and is proud of his culture and heritage, and he is trying to get Berneatha to see the beauty in her blackness..
George, who comes from a wealthy family represents an assimilationist, who just want to play it safe in life and merge with the dominate culture to be successful.
