6 Explain right The ________ side of the moon is illuminated when it is waxing. The New Moon appears to be dark because: The moon is between the earth and the Sun. The only side that is lit up is facing the sun.

7 Moon Affecting Events on Earth – Tides (Extra)
The moon actually CAUSES the tides. If there were no moon, we would have no tides. The tides arise due to the pull of the moon's gravity.

8 Neep and Spring Tides 3. Neep tides will occur when the moon is stage
Ocean tides are the daily rise and fall of sea levels. They are most noticeable on coastlines. Tides are due primarily to the gravitational pull of the moon on the earth, and to a lesser extent, to the gravitational pull of the sun. The force of gravity due to the moon pulls ocean water away from Earth’s surface. As Earth rotates, water is pulled up onto the shore at parts of Earth that face directly toward or away from the moon causing high tides. At the same time water is pulled away from the shorelines of points on Earth that are not pulled by the moon at that moment. These areas experience low tides. During new and full moons, the gravitational pulls of the sun and moon reinforce each other. This action results in a large distance between the high and low tide lines. These tides are called spring tides. The opposite behavior results in tides with decreased distance between the high and low tide lines. These are called neap tides. Neap tides occur when the sun and moon cancel out each other’s gravitational pull. 3. Neep tides will occur when the moon is stage First and third quarter 4. Spring tides will occur when the moon is in stage New moon and full moon

10 Sun and Moon If you watch the sun or moon for several hours, you will notice that each moves across the sky, which makes it look as if they are moving around Earth You may have also noticed that the shape of the moon appears to change, and that the lengths of daylight and darkness change throughout the year. All of these changes are caused by motions of Earth and its moon.

11 Earth’s Rotation If you look at a globe, you will notice that Earth spins, or rotates around its axis from west to east. Earth’s __________ is an imaginary line that runs from its North Pole, through its center to its South Pole axis

12 Earth’s Rotation Each complete spin around the axis, or _______________, takes about 24 hours, which marks the length of a day on Earth rotation

13 Earth’s Revolution revolves orbit gravitational
In addition to spinning around its axis, Earth also ___________, or circles, around the sun. The path a moon or planet follows as it moves around the sun is called its ____________. The orbit is caused by the _____________ attraction between the Earth and the sun. It takes 365 days, 5 hours,, 48 minutes and 46 seconds for Earth to make one revolution around the sun. This equals on Earth year. revolves orbit gravitational

14 Revolution versus Rotation (Extra)
A complete trip of the Earth around the sun. This takes the Earth one year. Rotation A complete turn of the Earth on its axis from west to east. This takes the Earth one day.

15 Earth’s Seasons Because Earth is tilted on its axis at an angle of 23.5 degrees and because it revolves around the sun, the lengths of day and night change throughout the year and we experience the _________________. seasons

16 The Seasons Has to do with direct rays of sunshine hitting parts Northern versus Southern Hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere Earth is tilted towards the sun during the ________________, resulting in longer periods of day light and warmer weather. Summer

17 The Seasons The day when Earth is most tilted towards the sun is called the _________________ (June 21st ) summer solstice

18 The Seasons In the winter, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, resulting in shorter days and longer nights and colder temperatures.

19 The Seasons The day when Earth is most tilted away from the sun is called the __________________ (December 21st). The days when Earth is NOT tilted towards the sun are called ________________ and occur in the spring and the fall. Winter solstice equinoxes

20 Just as the Earth revolves around the sun, the moon revolves around the Earth.
It takes 27.3 days for the moon to make a full revolution.

21 phases As it revolves, it goes through eight _____________.
The phases that you see depends on how much of the sunlit part of the moon you can see. The lit part you can see depends on the positions of Earth, moon and sun. phases

22 Sometimes the moon moves between Earth and the sun, casting a shadow, and sometimes moves into Earth's shadow, so that no sunlight falls on it. These events are called ___________________. An eclipse occurs when one object in space casts a shadow on another. eclipses

23 Solar and Lunar Eclipses
__________ occurs when the moon is between the Earth and the sun and the moon casts a shadow on Earth. People who are in the moon’s shadow can’t see the sun for a few minutes. Solar eclipse People who are in the moon’s shadow can’t see the sun for a few minutes.

24 Solar and Lunar Eclipses
A _________ eclipse occurs when the Earth is between the sun and the moon and the earth casts a shadow on the moon. Lunar eclipses can only occur when the moon is full and the shadow will block the moon for many hours.

25 Exploring Space Through Technology (Extra)
Telescopes Satellites and Probes

26 Use evidence from today’s lesson to re-answer the probe
Use evidence from today’s lesson to re-answer the probe. You may either change your initial response, or keep it the same, but it MUST be supported by EVIDENCE from the activity and reading.
