6 Friction and Force

7 Force Motion Speed Friction Gravity Weight Magnetism

8 Force A force is a push or a pull.
Force and Weight are both measured by a Spring Scale Newts are the units that measure force Motion is a change in position. Speed is the measure of how fast something moves over a certain distance. MPH/KPH are the Units used to measure Speed.

9

10 Force Questions What tool is used to measure pull? Triple Beam Balance
Spring Scale Newts I don’t know

11 Force Questions Give examples of the force push.
Give examples of the force pull. If an object has more mass does it require more or less force to move the object?

12 Gravity/Weight Gravity is a force that pulls objects down or toward each other. Everything with Mass has some Gravity The More Mass the More Gravity Weight is a measure of the pull of gravity on an object.

13

14 Questions When you jump in the air why do you fall back down to the ground? Mass Force Gravity I don’t know

15 Questions Would you weigh more or less on the moon than you do on Earth? You would weigh More on the moon Less on the moon The Same It Depends on other Variables Why?

16 Questions What force affects objects as they are pushed off a table?
Why do astronauts float in outer space?

17 Friction Friction is a force that opposes movement.
Friction occurs between any two surfaces that rub. Friction can even be found as planes fly through the air and fish swim through water. Friction is desired in some instances like bringing a car to a stop. Friction is not desired in other instances: trying to win a speed skating race.

18

19 Questions What is friction? A Force that Opposes Movement
A Push or a Pull The Measure of Gravity A Change in motion

20 Questions Give an example of where friction occurs in everyday life.
When would you not want a lot of friction?

21 Magnetism Magnetism is a force of attraction. NOT THE SAME AS GRAVITY!
The area around a magnet where the force of magnetism can be felt is called the magnetic field. All magnets have a magnetic field. Magnets attract iron and a few other magnetic materials. Not all metals are magnetic. Aluminum IS NOT magnetic. Magnetism can be used as a property of matter to determine whether an object is magnetic or not.

22

23 Questions What is magnetism? A Force that opposes movement
A measurement of pull A push or pull The Force of attraction.

24 Questions Which item would be attracted to a magnet: a rubber band
a Ziploc bag a needle an eraser?

25 Questions Which item would not be attracted to a magnet a nail
a coke can a needle a staple?

26 Questions Why can two magnets move each other without touching?
