2. WHAT IT IS?
Small group discussion is a planned conversation of a group of three or more people who are tasked to find solutions to some problems. This type of interpersonal communication is important especially in organizations, schools, government and non-government agencies, research foundations, business firms and the like for their functions to be carried out.

3. CLASSIFICATIONS Group interaction may be classified in three ways:
1. According to FOCUS, it may be:
a. inner focus discussion, or
b. audience focus discussion
2. According to FORMAT, it may be:
a. Panel Discussion,
b. Round Table Discussion
c. Symposium
3. According to purpose, it may be for:
a. Pleasure,
b. Learning/information sharing
c. Decision-making, or
d. Problem-solving

7. ELEMENTS
An effective group discussion has the following five essential elements:
An objective/purpose
A topic for discussion
A responsible leader
A group of thoughtful and skilled participants, and
An outline for discussion

8. FRAMEWORK
The general framework for a satisfactory group discussion consists of the following:
Introduction. This is the statement of the discussion question, its relevance or significance and the agenda to be followed.
The body. This is the analysis, investigation and presentation of possible solutions.
Conclusion. This is the summary of the points that have been taken up.

9. CONDUCTING THE SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION
Interaction is important in small group communication. The process is dynamic, spontaneous and continuous with each participant playing active roles speaker and listener. The interchange of ideas and opinions establishes cohesiveness andleads to the realization of the group’s discussion objective.

INTRODUCTION
-Leader introduces the topic.
-Leader explains the topic.
-Leader gives the significance of the topic.
-Determine the relevance of topic for the group.
-Limit topic and establishes scope.
-Leader decides specific area the group will explore
-He shows sincere interest in the topic
-He shows sens of purpose and direction
-His opinions and ideas remain in the background
-Leader and members direct attention to group purpose.
-Participants are encouraged to make suggestions
- Group keeps discussion information-centered
BODY
-Determine dimension from which topic will be discussed
-To clarify the discussion contribute personal experiences
-Members contribute ideas in their areas of competence
-Members center attention on goals moving forward and making changes as needed

11. FRAMEWORK WHAT TO DO HOW TO DO IT BODY CONCLUSION
-Bring out casual relationships resulting from discussion of personal experiences
-Determine inadequate or contradictory information
-Decide on facts that help accomplish the purpose of the group
-Leader and members maintain order and progression in the discussion
-Leader maintains balance between pros and cons
-Discussions are worked through to reach an agreement
CONCLUSION
-Leader restates importance of topic under study
-Leader sums up the most important points
-Leader provides feedback to members who, in turn, compare results
-Relates information obtained on topics and group purpose
-Group focuses on purpose of the discussion
-Final agreement on the essential points under each topic
-Provision for a change and adjustment as required
-Members are able to accomplish their purpose.
