1 Q2 : Do the worksheet at your table. Read the instructions and follow the two examples done for you. As you do each problem, after you write out the process, write how you would name this ion in a chemical formula.

2 Today’s Objective: I can classify unknown substances based on their physical properties.

3 Writing Chemical Formulas:
Find the element on the periodic table or in the polyatomic ion chart Determine its oxidation number Write each ion with its charge separately Determine how many of each you need Write the formula

4 Naming Chemical Formulas:
Break the formula into ions. Don’t forget to think about polyatomic ions which can be found on the chart Determine if it is an anion or a cation Cations go first and are simply the name Anions go second. Drop ending, and add –ide or use the name from the chart for polyatomic ions

5 Write the formula for calcium chloride:
Used as a deicer to remove salt from roadways and sidewalks.

6 Write the formula for potassium phosphate:
Found in fertilizer, antifreeze, rubber and plastic products, and used in manufacturing

7 Na2CrO4 Write the formula for sodium chromate: Chromate is
a polyatomic ion: CrO4-1 corrosion control, pigment formulations, wool dyeing, wood preservation, drilling fluids, catalysts and as oxidant in organic synthesis. Na2CrO4

8 Used in photography developing
Write the formula for Ammonium Sulfide: Used in photography developing (NH4)2S

9 Used in photography developing
Write the formula for Ammonium Sulfide: Used in photography developing (NH4)2S

10 Used in manufactory to neutralize acids
Write the formula for barium hydroxide: Used in manufactory to neutralize acids

11 What kind of substance is
sodium borate?
