Preface The International Conference on the Geology of Africa is held biannually in Assiut University, Egypt . The two year interval was to avoid competition with other International Geological Congress. The area of research for the Sixth International Symposium on the Geology of Africa covered almost all the north of the African continent . Oral and poster presentations were held at Assiut. More than 120 participants, most of them coming from North African Countries had convened in Assiut to present and discuss recent research work related to the objectives of the conference. Despite the efforts to reduce concurrent presentations, 56 papers were read at two parallel sessions for the first two and a half days. 5

Preface This volume consists of 30 papers contributed among 99 paper and poster presentations. Thanks to the 120 scientists who participated and made this symposium a successful one. The topics presented covered a wide field of practical and theoretical aspects. The host provided excellent conference facilities to enable unrestricted communication. The organizer had compiled an abstract booklet summarizing all contributions. Preparing and printing of proceedings was made possible by the financial support of the UNESCO regional office in Cairo. 6

Preface The present proceedings comprise papers of high quality. Unfortunately, not all presenters were able to submit written versions of their oral or poster presentations in time. Nevertheless, the content of the present proceedings is an excellent representation of the most discussed topics at the symposium. The grouping and arrangement of the contributed papers were not always done on a rational basis. These proceedings were organized into eight chapters according to major subjects, which in some cases were related to the characteristics of the study areas. 7

Preface The editorial work of this volume was performed by an Editorial Committee which consisted of ten members. During the course of publishing this volume, many colleagues provided their time and efforts in the tedious tasks of refereeing papers. The conference chairman wish to thank Prof. Dr. Mostafa Youssef and all the staff of the geology department for organizing the symposium and for the post symposium workshop. With these proceedings we would like to acknowledge their enormous efforts . The layout of the proceedings was done by Ms. Walaa A. Ali and Maha A. Refaat from the geology department , cartography lab. 8

Preface The symposium was followed by a two-day (27-28 March 2009) post symposium workshop " Earth Science Education Initiatives in Africa" organized by the UNESCO regional office in Cairo and was joined by 15 scientists from the African continent. The objective of the workshop was to assess regional capacities and needs in earth science education, research and industry underlining existing centers of excellence through conversation with relevant regional and international experts including representatives of Universities, Applied Schools, Geological Surveys, Industry, and Governments and plotting the way ahead for earth science education. 9

Preface On the first day, the participants had to assess current educational systems and successful examples. The second day the participants discussed National and International Earth Science partnerships and future opportunities The present proceedings are also meant as a stimulus for participation in future symposia. Prof. Dr. Mervat A. Elhaddad Assiut , March 2010 10
