1  APPLICATION OF BRADFORD LAW AND LEIMKUHLER MODEL ON JOURNAL OF SOIL BIOLOGY AND ECOLOGY (JSBE) : A COMPARATIVE STUDY Dr. Sangeeta Paliwal Associate professor , Department of Library science, IPS Academy, Indore (M.P.) and Dr. Surendra Kumar Documentation Officer, Directorate of Soybean Research, Indore ( M.P.) India

2 1. Introduction The present study is based on Journal of Soil Biology and Ecology from It is published by Indian society of Soil Biology and Ecology. Started in 1981. Bradford’s law of Scattering In 1934 this law was formulated by S.C.Bradford and the concept of core journal is one of the result of Bradford’s law of scattering.

3 Introduction Leimkuhler developed a model based on Bradford’s verbal formulation .Therefore, the Leimkuhler model is employed for the verification of Bradford’s law of Scattering.

4 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY-
I To find out types of document cited in Journal of Soil Biology and Ecology from ii. To find out country of mostly cited journals. iii. To find out mostly cited journals by Agricultural Scientist. iv. comparison of Bradford’s law of Scattering and Leimkuhler model

5 Methodology: We first analyses 121 articles published during in JSBE. The analysis includes 2069 citations out of which citations were from 524 research Journals and it is the base of this study. A database sheet has been created. For journal citation the information regarding the country of publication, subject and other bibliographic details was obtained from “Word Cat” and “DELNET DATABASE”.

6 ANALYSIS OF DATA Type of documents cited: Out of total references under study, 67.28% citations are from journals. Only 18.08% citation is from books. Conference / seminars proceedings follow with 5.12% & thesis with 4.01% (Ph.D & M.Sc.). Journals top the rank with 1932 references (67.28%) in all references.

7 Types of Documents cited-

8 Citation of Journals by Country-
In my study I found total 89 country’s 524 Journals cited although in the following graph I used for top ten countriesonly As we can see in the Graff bellow cited journals are from USA i.e. citation 356 ( 25.6% ) and Journals al so almost same 131 ( 24.9% ) followed by Indian Journal i.e. Citations 306 ( 21.9% ) and Journals 121 ( 23%) . Following table shows that the Core journals in agricultural science approximate 66.9% where published from USA, India and UK.

9 5.2. Citation of Journals by Country-

10 5.3 Journals cited in Journal of Soil Biology and Ecology
In our study 524 journal’s 1392 articles cited. Top ten journals cover 25.6% of the citations . following figure shows top ten journals

11 5.3 Journals cited in Journal of Soil Biology and Ecology

12 5.5. Application of Bradford’s law of Scattering-
Zones No. of Journals No. of citations Core Zone 18 462 Zone1 83 417 Zone 2 423 513 Total 524 1392

13 Bradford’s group and their number of Journals

14 Application of Bradford’s law of Scattering
According to Bradford law, each zone produces 1/3 of total relevant papers and the number of periodicals in each zone should be in 1: n: n2 In this study First 462 citations are only from top ranked 18 journals. Journal ranked at 19 to 35 (83 total) consist of another zone with articles (total 879) another 417 articles cited in JSBE. In the last zone 423 periodicals cover 513 articles. So the present study is 18: 83: 423:: 1: n: n2 Here 18 represent the number of periodicals n= 4.7 are a multiplier. Therefore, X18:4.7X18:23.5X = : 4.7: 23.5 It should be : 4.7: (4.7) = 1: n: n 2 But it is : 4.7: 1.07X (4.7)2 # 1: n: n2 Percentage of error =

15 Application of Leimkuhler model-
For application of Leimkuhler law, divide the citation distribution in three or more approximately equal zones (p). Since Bradford assumes that there should be minimum three zones, here also p is assumed to be 3. Then by using the mathematical formula K=(ey X Ym) 1/p

16 Application of Leimkuhler model-
The value of the Bradford’s multiplier K is calculated as K= (1.781 X Ym) 1/p Where ey = 1.781 P is Bradford’s number of zones i.e. = 3 Ym is the number of citation of rank one journal = 76 k= 5.137

17 Application of Leimkuhler model-
Using K we can calculate different Bradford groups. The nucleus zone r0can be defined as: r0 = T (k-1)/ (kp-1) Where T represents total number of journals 524. So, r0 = Different Bradford zone can be obtained using the value of k and r0 Nucleus zone r0 = r0 X 1 =16.11 First Zone r1 = r0 X k = 82.76 Second zone r2 = r0 x k2 =

18 using Leimkuhler model, Bradford’s group and their number of Journals
Zones No. of Journals No. of citations k Core Zone 16 438 Zone1 83 432 5.152 Zone 2 425 522 Total 524 1392

19 using Leimkuhler model, Bradford’s group and their number of Journals
Therefore, the Bradford’s distribution can be written as (Table 5) – 1: k: k2 = Percentage of error = /524 X 100 =

20 CONCLUSION- Here we conclude that if we are using Leimkuhler model to find n for Bradford law we will get more relevant result for citations. As we get the percentage of error through Bradford law is % and through Leimkuhler model percentage of error is % only. When the Leimkuhler model is applied for the verification of Bradford’s law, it is found that the law find valid for the data set.
