1 E.Y.F.S - ‘Winter (& Christmas!)’ Lesson 1
The Power of P.E E.Y.F.S - ‘Winter (& Christmas!)’ Lesson 1 SoW P.E Outcomes Focus: (P Markers) ‘Moves freely & with pleasure and confidence in a range of ways’ ‘Runs skilfully and negotiates space successfully, adjusting speed or direction to avoid obstacles’ ‘Can stand momentarily on one foot when shown’ Challenge 1– Can children follow simple instructions (I.e. - Run, Stop etc) Challenge 2 – Can children copy the actions and movements of the teacher with guidance (whilst the teacher is performing the actions) Challenge 3 – Can children perform actions after a verbal command? (without a supporting demonstration) Learning Objectives: L.O 1 – Develop pupils ability to move in a variety of ways L.O 2 – Develop pupils ability to recognise and list characteristics of Winter We’re using numeracy skills! We’re using literacy skills! We’re learning an amazing fact! 1.Warm-up – Winter (It’s getting colder!): Ask the children to jog around the space avoiding each other and listening to instructions. If you shout ‘It’s Summer’ children can continue to jog at a steady pace as normal, when you shout ‘It’s Autumn – it’s getting colder!’ the children must pretend to put on items of clothing (Coats, Hats, Gloves etc) and jog on the spot as fast as they can to warm themselves up! 2. Watch out for Jack Frost! – Ask pupils what happens to water as the weather gets colder (it freezes!) - All of your children will take the role of water. Pick 2 children to take the role of Jack Frost. ‘Jack Frost’ have to chase after the other children and tag them. If the children are tagged by Jack Frost then they have to freeze! Keep playing the game until all the children have been frozen! M/A – Ask them to move in more complex more ways (Hop, Jump, Skip) . L/A – Children get 2 lives, if they’re touched twice they are frozen! 3. Jack Frost vs the Sunshine! – Now that the children understand water freezes when it gets really cold it is time to develop the game further! Pick two children to wear a yellow bib and give them a yellow cone/spot to hold – these children are now the sunshine (the cone/spot is sunlight!). Explain to the children that when ice warms up it melts! (back to water & the children can move again). The ‘sunshine’ must hold their sunlight up to the frozen people for 5 seconds to melt them & allow them to play the game again! Ask M/A pupils to move in more complex ways (Hop, Jump, Skip etc). L/A – Still get 2 lives to allow them to play the game for longer!

2 E.Y.F.S – Winter (& Christmas!) L1
The Power of P.E E.Y.F.S – Winter (& Christmas!) L1 Equipment needed: Disc Cones, Blue and yellow bibs How will the lesson be set up? Watch out for Jack Frost! Oh no! I can’t move because I’m frozen! W/Up – Winter (It’s getting Colder! = Jack Frost Jack Frost vs the Sunshine! I can move again, the Sun has melted me! = Jack Frost = The Sun What do I need to learn? (L.O.1): Running & Stopping Some children will not naturally run/stop with a space in between their feet. If this is the case you could ask them to run with feet Either side of the set point. Also children need to bend their knees to stop/jump! V.Important! What do I need to learn? (L.O.2): What happens in Winter? These role play games in P.E are fantastic (if we do say so ourselves) to develop FMS whilst reinforcing the content you are teaching in the classroom!

L/A – Still get 2 lives to allow them to play the game for longer! 3. Winter Olympics – Speed Skater School!: As the Winter Olympics approaches it is really important that all of the athletes practice being light on the feet. This activity is designed to help our Speed Skaters get ready to compete in the Olympics! Set out a variety of different activities that encourage the children to change direction quickly and move in a range of different ways. Structure all activities so M/A can choose a high level of challenge & activities are accessible for your L/A (see overleaf) Literacy opportunity! – Ask the children how they might feel if they had to race in front of people & on telly!?

4 E.Y.F.S – Winter (& Christmas!) L2
The Power of P.E E.Y.F.S – Winter (& Christmas!) L2 Equipment needed: Disc Cones, Blue and yellow bibs, hurdles (or something to soft to jump over), flat dot markers How will the lesson be set up? Winter Olympics – Speed Skater School FINISH (Give the kids space to stop!) W/Up – Winter (It’s getting Colder! FINISH The kids have to get from Start>Finish Without touching the floor! It gets harder the further right you try it! S P R I N T ! Jack Frost vs the Sunshine! Agility slalom – The cones get larger & closer together! START I can move again, the Sun has melted me! 2 sections of hurdles. M/A can try the line where hurdles are closer together! START What do I need to learn? (L.O.1): Running & Stopping Some children will not naturally run/stop with a space in between their feet. If this is the case you could ask them to run with feet Either side of the set point. Also children need to bend their knees to stop/jump! V.Important! What do I need to learn?: Changing direction and keeping balance To remained balanced when changing direction the children should shuffle their feet with a slight bend at the knee – without ever crossing them. Children crossing legs will be slower & risk falling over!

Brrrrrrrrr – We need to wrap up warm!: Split your group into teams (aim for no more than 5 in a team to avoid inactivity). Ask them to line-up single file behind a set point (use a cone or a dot). At Winter its important to put on as many layers as you can to stay warm – so the children will race to collect in as many items of clothing as possible. Teams must go one at a time & fetch an item to bring back to the team. You could put all of your M/A children in one team and ask them to start further back then everyone else - Cruel but effective...mwahaha (evil laugh) Literacy opportunity! – Ask the children how they might feel if they had to race in front of people & on telly!?

Where have all the birds gone?: This game is really active and teaches the children about the migration of birds during winter! You will need a yellow and a white cone. The yellow cone (representing the sun) should be held up to symbolise Spring>Autumn. During this period children must listen to your commands . When the white cone is held up it is Winter & all of the children (playing the role of birds) must make their way to Africa asap!! Use your commands to extend the children’s vocabulary

8 E.Y.F.S – Winter (& Christmas!) L4
The Power of P.E E.Y.F.S – Winter (& Christmas!) L4 Equipment needed: Disc Cones, Blue and yellow bibs, flat dot markers, hats & gloves How will the lesson be set up? Where have all the birds gone? W/Up -Jack Frost vs the Sunshine! Spring/Summer/Autumn= Winter = I can move again, the Sun has melted me! (Where it’s hot!) AFRICA When the white cone is held up all of the birds (children) must quickly go to Africa! United Kingdom (Where it’s cold in winter!) Brrrrrrrr – We need to wrap up! L/A M/A Shout out commands telling the children how to move - Walking, Jumping, Dancing, Stomping, Hopping etc What do I need to learn? 9 E.Y.F.S - ‘Winter (& Christmas!)’ Lesson 5
The Power of P.E E.Y.F.S - ‘Winter (& Christmas!)’ Lesson 5 SoW P.E Outcomes Focus: (P Markers) Run skilfully & negotiates space successfully, adjusting speed or direction to avoid obstacles, Eats a healthy range of foodstuffs & understands need for variety in food, ‘Shows increasing control over an object (Pushing/Throwing) Challenge 1– Can children follow simple instructions (I.e. - Run, Stop etc) Challenge 2 – Can children stop a bean bag using only their hands and slide it back to a target? Challenge 3 – Can children catch a large soft catch ball with a degree of consistency (working towards a medium sized ball) Learning Objectives: L.O 1 – Children develop FUNdamentals movement of Running, Jumping , Stopping, Throwing & Catching! L.O 2 – Children to improve knowledge of the characteristics of Winter We’re using numeracy skills! We’re using literacy skills! We’re learning an amazing fact! 1.Warm-up – Wise men follow the star: For this warm-up the children take on the role of the wise men. To begin with ask an adult to hold act as the ‘star’. ‘The star’ is simply someone holding the star high in the air and moving around your space! All of the other children follow this star in single file (because they are the wise men and it will lead them to Jesus!). PROGRESSION – Vary your methods of movement and ask the children to copy you. Once the children understand how the game works ask your More Able children to lead the group by taking on the role of the star. 2. The night before Christmas – Santa sneak-a-round: Explain to the children that it’s really important that Santa moves quietly so he doesn’t wake up all of the families he visits the night before Christmas. First let the children experiment with different ways of movement (both loud & quiet) – use modelling to show other children creative ways of moving. PROGRESSION – Split the children into two groups. Ask an adult to face away from the children and place a mixture of items on one side of the room, the children sitting at the other. Each team has to sneak and fetch as many items from the other side of the room as possible. As soon as someone makes too much noise the adult turns round & stops them. The sneakiest team (with the most items) wins the game! 3. Christmas Eve at Santa’s Grotto – Toy testing: Before Santa can take all of the toys out to be placed under the tree they need to be tested! The toys have been laid out in your space ready to be tested. Each toy has three levels to try & complete. Allow children to choose which ‘toy to test’. Encourage creativity – “Can you think another game to play with this toy?” Monitor the progress of your children (M/A may need encouraging to move up a level, L.A may need support to access games

10 E.Y.F.S – Winter (& Christmas!) L5
The Power of P.E E.Y.F.S – Winter (& Christmas!) L5 Equipment needed: Disc Cones, A star, Toys! – all w/ the theme of travelling, targets (use cones to make a target if) needed How will the lesson be set up? The night before Christmas – Santa sneak-a-round W/Up – Wise men follow the star SHHHHH! Children practice moving making as little sound as possible & as loud as possible! Christmas Eve at Santa’s Grotto – Toy Testing! Throwing testing area – Children use bean bags and attempt to hit the middle of the target! Travelling testing area – Ask children to progress from larger objects to smaller. Can they create new methods of movement safely? Catching testing area – Can children progress from ‘self-catching’ large>small. Individual to throwing/catching in pairs L/A M/A THROWING LINE What do I need to learn? (L.O.1): When stopping/catching it is important that the children place their hands close Together. Fingers apart and outstretched, soft hands. When using larger balls (as an Introduction) encourage children to keep hands close to their chest! What do I need to learn?: Throwing for accuracy When throwing for accuracy it is best to throw under-arm, with a slight bend in the knee. On release the children should point their fingers at their target, moving their arm in a steady motion

Rudolph’s Reindeer race!: To get the reindeers ready for their very big night of hard work they practice by having relay races. The children will take the role of the reindeer in these relays. All children must move in the same direction (clockwise/anti-clockwise) and navigate/dodge the obstacles set out. PROGRESSION – Split your group into teams once they have learned the relay course & have a race! Ensure M/A complete the most difficult obstacles to challenge them further ZOOM!
