3 Planning Mission Statement
Overview: Left Ventricular Assistant Device (LVAD) is designed for people in the future to have mobility while waiting for a heart transplant. The test loop is a model of the human body so we can identify and model the pump characterization curves and to test the damage caused by the LVAD to the blood. Family Goals: Create a more effective/efficient blood circulation loop My Goals: Fit & Finish, decrease it’s size and take care of the flaws/problems the previous teams have been suffering. Future Goals: LVAD eventually be placed in the human body Primary Market: Patients on the heart transplant waiting list, healthy enough for day to day living Stakeholders: Staff and Teachers affiliated with this project, students in present and upcoming senior design teams, and future patients.

5 Merging of Projects 09021 and 09454 have very similar needs.
454 is researching impellers and diffusers 021’s pump is heating the blood excessively and causing blood damage If 454 can create an impeller that is more efficient and generates less heat 021 will not have nearly the same blood damage that they expect to have with the current impeller.

6 Concept Development Customers Needs
Reason for investment: The current available LVAD is to large and is not portable. Test Loop System will help with the design of the LVAD Produce an LVAD that is small enough to be implanted in the abdomen or be able to attach to ones belt. Direct correlation to the patients quality of life. A new technology that has to be explored.

Blood is Newtonian No blood damage Drain and fill times must be fast (minutes) Cost must be within budget Continuous use Pressure must be low enough for quick connect usage Temperature must be held constant +/- Data processing must be completed in seconds Flow rate must be around 5 liters/min

Be smaller, more efficient, more effective, and have greater sensor capabilities in each model made. I would like to visit the current 021 team in their review sessions and get more feed back from their design problems. For the final presentation have a conclusion on what needs to be fixed for next year

14 Latest Meeting Info No Leaks and quick connects have about 3 drops when they are disconnected Draining system works great. Complete drainage in 20 seconds Heater is assembled but not active Pump works great for circulation of the water tank Water tank is used for the heating and cooling of the blood (indirect and slow) Epoxy or grease is needed to seal the o-ring for the glycerin (blood substitute) lid
