EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Mission Statement Product Description Currently the magnets made produce magnetic fields that are non-concentric with their diameters and the proposed device will correct this discrepancy. Firstly, the magnet will be placed on a bushing with a non-concentric diameter, therefore, the device will monitor and physically move the bushing giving the bushing a concentric diameter relative to the center. The Centering Magnet Device will monitor the magnet’s magnetic field and physically move the magnet producing a concentric field. Producing a magnetic field concentric with the magnet’s diameter plays a crucial role in the survival of the Left Ventricle Assistant Device (LVAD). Key Business Goals The primary business goals of this product are to: Provide a device which offers a solution to the problem of non-concentric bushings and magnetic fields Produce a magnetic field that is concentric because concentricity of the magnetic field is crucial in having a working bearing-free heart pump Increase efficiency. Currently, the centering the magnetic field is time consuming, this device will be more automated and thus decrease the turn out time. Increase automation of the device which, in turn, will decrease the likelihood of human error. As human error decreases, the precision of centering magnets increases. The device will be the first step in the mass production process of the LVAD heart pump. Time saved in the centering process will lower the cost of the heart pump thus increasing viability with stakeholders. Primary Market The LVAD heart pump will serve the portion of the community with incurable congestive heart disease. Current heart pumps on the market last for a few short years due to mechanical failure or biological complications. The LVAD heart pump will have a vastly superior life of twenty years. This increase in the service life will greatly prolong survival for people with congestive heart disease. Secondary Market Magnets are used in a plethora of devices, therefore, having a magnet with concentric magnetic field will greatly increase the longevity and efficiency of those devices. The Centering Magnet Device will have a precision of 0.01 millimeters in measuring therefore any company or device which uses a rotating shaft could use the Centering Magnet Device in measuring the concentricity of a product. Stakeholders Stakeholders in the design of our product include the following: People with congestive heart disease The families to the people with congestive heart failure United States Medicare Insurance companies Company involved in the development of the LVAD heart pump Companies that are involved with the manufacturing of parts for the LVAD heart pump Secondary companies which have devices or products that need to have a precise concentric diameter

EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Staffing Requirements Mechanical Engineers Number: 3 Mechanical Engineers The mechanical engineering students of this project will be responsible in the development and construction of the Magnet Centering Device. The device will need to be assembled and documented throughout the Senior Design process. The current device used in centering magnets cannot be modified during Senior Design. Therefore, a new device will have to be created. However, the design of the current device can be re-engineered and modified with the new device. Electrical Engineers Number: 2 Electrical Engineers The electrical engineers of this project will be responsible for the creation and design of the circuitry of the Magnet Centering Device. Because the process of centering the bushings and magnets, of the LVAD heart pump will be almost completely automated the need for wiring schematics and design is crucial to this projects success. Industrial and Systems Engineers Number: 0 At this time, an industrial and systems engineer is not needed. However, as the project continues to develop the need for these engineers may be required. Computer Engineers Number: 1 The computer engineer will have the responsibility of creating and implementing a software package that will run and monitor the bushings and magnets concentricity. The program used for the current Magnet Centering Device is LabVIEW therefore a computer engineer who is prolific in the use of this software would be essential. Business Majors Number: 0 At this time a business major is not necessary, however, as the progresses in development continue the need for these students may be required.

EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Resource Requirements People Quantify Dr. Steven Day will be the individual most involved with this project due to his lengthy experience with the heart pump as well as his comprehensive, across-the-board work on the project. Dr. Day has operational oversight on this project and has strong plan to accomplish the goal of the project. Other people crucial to the success of the project are the individuals who designed and implemented the current Magnet Centering Device and possess of knowledge on the heart pump. Environment Quantify The lab where the research is currently being performed would be most beneficial during the developmental stages. However, as the project progresses and the construction begins, an area with more available space and equipment is necessary. Equipment Quantify Thus far, the equipment needed for this project has not been determined. However, in future interviews with Dr. Day and the individuals who have been involved with the current Magnet Centering Device, the equipment necessary shall be identified. Materials Quantify Much like the equipment portion of this project, the material needed cannot be determined at this time. However, following a series of interviews with relevant individuals and as more information on the project becomes available the material needed will be apparent.

EDGE™ Phase 1: Concept Development Identify Customer Needs - Interviews Primary Customer(s) Quantify An interview with Dr. Day has been conducted and the information he provided presented a clear vision on the goals for this project. The impetus for the development of a new the Magnet Centering Device are as followed: –Create a device which is more automated than current device –Generate a more automated device which involves less human interaction –A more automated device will increase the precision of the process (a concentricity of 0.01 mm) –With less human interaction the chance of error decreases –The time in manufacturing a complete concentric magnet assembly decreases –The decrease in the time of manufacturing means an increase in mass production –The increase in mass production will lower the cost of the LVAD heart pump therefore increase sales Other Stakeholder(s) Quantify Other stakeholders have not been interviewed thus far. However, as the project develops the likelihood for more information from different people involved with this project will be apparent. Past Senior Design Team(s) Quantify The past Senior Design projects involved with the LVAD heart pump did not deal with centering of bushings or magnets. However, the Magnet Centering Device currently being used in the LVAD laboratory has software programs and design concepts being implemented in the centering of bushings and magnets. These concepts that are already in use will be examined and adjusted to modify the new Magnet Centering Device. The mistakes and design flaws of the current device will be examined therefore maximizing the thoroughness of the new design.

EDGE™ Phase 1: Concept Development Identify Customer Needs - Benchmarking Competitive or Cooperative Solutions Quantify and Identify The purpose of this design project is to develop a new device which involves less human interface than the current device and provides reliable and consist measuring of the bushings and magnets of the LVAD. By presenting the problems with the current device, benchmarking would provide solutions to this problems, therefore, this would start the design process for the new device. Benchmarking process would involve the examination of the current Magnet Centering Device and go through the process of centering the bushings and magnets. With the process of the current device known, the development of a new device and understanding the principles in the design will be simpler. Internet Search Quantify and Identify Throughout the development and design the internet will be a useful tool in finding and ordering of parts needed in the development of the Magnet Centering Device. Technical Literature Search Quantify and Identify Before a plan can be implemented on the development of a new Magnet Centering Device, a literature review will be done. The literature review will examine processes and devices that have a similar function to the Magnet Centering Device. Knowing what has been developed and how the device worked can help in the design process of this project.

EDGE™ Phase 1: Concept Development Identify Customer Needs - Interpret Needs Statements: 1.The Magnet Centering Device must center a bushing, on which a magnet will be residing. 2.Once the bushing has been centered, a magnet will be placed on the bushing and sensors which can detect magnetic fields will determine the concentricity of the magnetic field. 3.With the magnetic field being monitored, the magnet will be physically pushed thus offsetting the non-concentric field of the magnet. 4.The process will be done using a LabVIEW program which will limit human involvement. Graphical Interpretation 1.Thus far, most data for this project has not been collected. The only data gathered was a design concept on what the new device will do. As the project develops, an affinity diagram and objective tree will be relevant. Once a literature review has been done, a process can be implemented. Organize the Needs into a Hierarchy 1.The process will be a simple loading of a bushing, center the bushing and attach a magnet to the centered bushing then correct the magnets non-concentric field. Center the bushing using a device which can measure the physical inconsistency of the bushing. Once the bushing has been centered, a magnet will be loaded and pushed until the magnet has a concentric field. This process will be continued until the desired assembly of bushings and magnets is met. Establish the Relative Importance of the Needs 1.Thus far, the importance of needs cannot be established. As the project develops, the importance of needs will be more apparent.

EDGE™ Future Plan Where do you go from here? Give us some idea of where you are headed from this point going forward…. 1.Conduct more interviews with people who used and designed the current Magnet Centering Device. 2.Conduct a literature review on the processes and the current device. 3.Come up with simple designs and ideas of a device that can accomplish the projects goals 4.Review these ideas with Dr. Day and other people who would have insight into this device. 5.Change or correct designs according to the various opinions offered by those individuals involved with centering the magnets.
