4 The Anchor Mission: To consciously and strategically apply the long-term, place-based economic power of the institution, in combination with its human and intellectual re-sources, to better the welfare of the communities in which they reside, and in particular low- and moderate-income neighborhoods.

5 Why an Anchor Dashboard?
Growing recognition that community economic development is part & parcel of what anchor institutions do But how do we know these initiatives are working? Do they meet the needs of low-income families and neighborhoods? Needed: Targeted outcomes; Indicators; Data Collection Caveat: The Dashboard is a starting point, not the final word. Our hope to co-construct a learning community.

6 Key Themes from the Research
Define the community Agree on specific desired outcomes Include two kinds of indicators, which measure: • Status of the community • Institutional effort to improve the status of the community

7

8 Expectations from Participants
Commit to seek improvement outcomes in the areas outlined by the Dashboard Work on indicator development and refinement Partner with other institutions to build a community of practice

9 Role of Democracy Collaborative
Organize two gatherings a year (fall, spring) Conduct at least one two-day site visit per year to meet with campus team members Facilitate open conversation among pilot group members Work with institutions to think through the process of indicator development

10 I think that would be extremely powerful.
Why It Matters Being able to, by the end of the day, track what’s happening to the jobs, track what’s happening to those families… I think that would be extremely powerful. Paulina Gonzalez Executive Director Strategic Actions for a Just Economy Los Angeles, California
