An exercise that helps us to focus and reflect on Action Plans in our School Development Plan and other initiatives.

It involves reflection on the educational aims and values as set out by the school.

It includes diagnosis of whether these aims and objectives are still relevant to new challenges.

10 School Self-Evaluation... A Philosophy and Praxis
School self-evaluation places emphasis firmly and clearly on the school as a whole and on the corporate contribution to improving learning and teaching rather than on isolating the .....performance of individual members of staff. It creates purpose and cohesion rendering the learning community in unison to reach the school’s goals. It nurtures the school/College as a learning community.

11 The Learning Community
A learning organisation is a term given to an organisation that facilitates the learning of its members and continuously transforms itself. Learning organisations become more like communities that members become Committed to.

12 Necessary Conditions To establish the learning community we need to:
Acknowledge areas in need of improvement Pose the problems Take risks Collaborate Demonstrate respect and understanding Model learning Maintain a focus on learning Priorities people & relationships

13 School Self-Evaluation... A Culture
Self evaluation is a critical approach to school appraisal, on a fully corporate basis, founded on the analysis of evidence and draws heavily upon perception secured from others outside the school’s staff, possibly including both pupils and parents.

14 School Self-Evaluation... A Culture
It gives the opportunity for the staff to become more involved in the school’s management thus contributing in the shaping of policy development as well as raising individual staff development needs.

15 Why Should The School Do
Self-Evaluation School self-evaluation makes everyone aware of the school’s goals. Everyone is working towards a common, known and agreed policy to reach identified goals. The main concern is the improvement of teaching and learning. It provides an opportunity to look back and examine whether those goals are being reached, how far the school is succeeding, and what strategies to adopt, to strengthen areas which need further development.

16 Self-Evaluation... An Approach
Formulate clear aims and objectives together. Make sure that all concerned know about them and understand them. Devise ways and means to implement them. Monitor regularly the practices for their implementation. Evaluate current performance. Stop and analyse the assessment of strengths and weaknesses. Review aims and objectives. Update accordingly. Write up a brief report that reviews achievements, developments, progress, problems encountered, measured outcomes.

17 SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT THROUGH SELF-EVALUATION
When colleagues see that monitoring and self-evaluation lead to: revisions in practice, closer attention to pupils’ needs, stronger emphases on classroom processes, richer understandings of pupil achievements, They will feel reassured that management is focusing on the core tasks rather than on what may be seen as administrative.

18 Tools and Practical Approaches to be used for School Self Evaluation.
Given the resolve to do something, the Action Plan should be constructed and as part of it, targets set for what should happen. Targets should provide us with clear goals to work towards. When they are reached, we should feel a sense of success and when a colleague notes that we have achieved them we can feel reassured that we really have.

Planning together helps us develop a shared meaning of what needs to change and how we want it to change. It will help answer the following questions: Where are we now? Where do we want to go? How will we get there? How are we doing?

Once an area of concern has been addressed we can then create an action plan to see how it is going to be tackled. What does an action plan entail? Setting targets, including criteria for success. Implementation strategies for achieving targets. Timescale Resources and staff development requirements Evaluation procedures

The Action sheet helps us to determine: What needs to be done? How it is to be done? Who is to do (or coordinate) it? By when it is to be achieved? What resources are needed? How will we know when the target has been achieved? Who will check progress?

25 Conclusion Although all people have a capacity to learn the structures in which they function may not be conducive to reflect and engage. A collaborative learning organisation encourages people to explore, exchange and achieve desired goals.
