4. II. Trends of the 1920’s
The Roaring Twenties (1920’s) was a decade of rapid and dramatic change.
National economy expanded
Consumer spending increased
Mass media extended its influence
Newspapers, radio, magazine, movies, TV.
Social values changed

5. For the 1st time consumers could buy on credit and make payments on installment plans. (Usually with high interest)
In 1929 more than half the automobiles purchased in the U.S. were bought on installment plans.
Economic expansion relied on development of consumer economy – one where people purchase a large number of consumer products.

6. Electrical appliances in the household grew to include vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, fans, toasters, stoves, sewing machines, and electric irons.
Before WWI, only about 16% of Americans households had electricity; by 1930, that had jumped to 70%.

7. Alvin Kelly's stunt occurred in 1924 and within weeks hundreds of people were trying to call themselves the "King of the Pole." One man sat for 12 days, another for 17 and another for 21 days.
