2 Why do we need to develop services?
Changing Population - It is estimated that by 2025 the number of people over 85 will have increased by two thirds nationally. - West Dorset is projected to have the largest gains in older population, with the numbers of people aged 65+ increasing by almost 20,000 in 2026. - There are approximately 700,00 people with dementia, In 30 years this figure is expected to double to 1.4 million. Take up of Personal Budgets as direct payments. In pilot 44.8% of service users who had a personal budget opted to have a direct payment to arrange their own care/support Consultation underway on new charging policy for day services 22nd March 2010 Developing Community Based Services –

22nd March 2010 Dorchester Day Service for older people Expenditure in 2008/2009 was £389,359.80 Average cost per person, per day in 2008/2009 was £50.61 Estimated that 25% of registered service users have dementia 38 places 78% Occupancy Developing Community Based Services

4 Greenwood Centre 22nd March 2010 Greenwood Centre for people with a physical disability Average cost per person per day in 2008/2009 was £113.62 10 places on both and Tuesday and a Thursday 8 People with a physical disability who live in Dorchester attend the Acorns in Weymouth Developing Community Based Services

5 Persons with a Learning Disability
22nd March 2010 Currently minimal day service for people with a learning disability Estimated cost based on average cost of a day service is £88.36 46 People with a learning disability living in Dorchester and surrounding villages. - 18 Attend day services in Weymouth - 26 Attend day services in Bridport (2 day service at Acland Road) - 2 Attend day services in Sturminster Newton Developing Community Based Services

6 Conversations 22nd March 2010 172 conversations held with service users, carers, staff and independent groups within the Dorchester area Overall key themes established Most significant finding was the huge number of individual choices Developing Community Based Services

22nd March 2010 -Consistent carers -Taxi service -Food delivery services -Support from family/friends/neighbours -Independence -Voluntary Work Developing Community Based Services At the Day Centre: -Social Interaction/company -Catering provisions -Activities -Staff Mental stimulation Enriches routine

8 Service Users - “What’s not working?”
22nd March 2010 -Would like more choice of activities -Require better communication between services -Better access to information about alternative options -Transport accessibility and flexibility -Need more opportunities for voluntary/paid work -Isolation due to rural location -Unsuitable leisure centre equipment -Home care too expensive and inflexible -Lack of funding for activities -Concerns about independent living Developing Community Based Services At the Day Centre: -Not enough outings -Transport buses arrive too early -Number of activities declining -Would like more days at the centre

22nd March 2010 -Access to transport -Availability and inflexibility of activities -Need for more respite -More support from medical professionals -More suitable equipment and flexible time slots at Leisure Centre -Concerned about the effects of Direct Payments -Concerns around ability to fund care in the future Developing Community Based Services At the Day Centre: -Transport needs to be more consistent -More staff required -Potential attendance charge -No choice in days to attend -More activities to encourage mental stimulation -Lack of alternatives if service user does not like attending

22nd March 2010 -Project Work e.g. Dorset History Museum Art Project -Open days at local sites -Service user community involvement At the Day Centre: -Ability to learn new skills -Social interaction -Respite for carer -Catering provisions -Provides moral support -Varied range of activities -Central location of centre -Help from volunteers Developing Community Based Services

13 Staff - “What’s not working?”
22nd March 2010 -Access -Public transport needs to be more accessible (specifically trains) -Lack of information about activities available At the Day Centre: -Staffing means one-to-one care is difficult -Need more flexibility around opening times -More dementia training required -Need more volunteers -Transport needs to be more consistent -Staff need to be consulted more on decisions about the centre Developing Community Based Services
