2 2 How we have been developing Stockport’s local dementia strategy Held 4 multi-disciplinary workshops in March 2009 for stakeholders from variety of agencies Held a variety of service user consultations including – Carers event at Town Hall last June – Main event Houldsworth Mill 8 th July 2009 – Gathered feedback from BME communities in August 2009 Compiled draft strategy with stakeholders involvement Final strategy including implementation plan July 2010

3 3 Users and carers’ feedback Main topics: Getting a diagnosis: can be a struggle, takes time Staff skills and attitudes: don’t always know what to do, signposting role Support to enable people to stay at home: flexible and more continuity & knowing what is available Support for carers: more variety & flexible Care in general hospital: more dementia-friendly Information and advice: pro-active and continuous

7 7  Developing Dementia friendly social care services: All staff basic knowledge about dementia and how best to communicate with people with dementia Clear information material Person centred assessment tools and care plans Life story approach (getting to know the person) Right environment in council buildings and housing schemes: signage, clear colours, telecare equipment Carers involvement Signposting role for us all to encourage people to go to GP and/or access available dementia services Awareness of best interest decision making Next Steps 2010 /2011

8 8 Testing different peer support opportunities July 2009 successful DH demonstrator site bid 3 projects ongoing in Stockport: – EDUCATE - people with dementia use their skills and experience to raise awareness of dementia and to educate others about their condition – Virtual - connecting 10 people with dementia and their families through the internet to form a virtual peer support network – User led - assisting people with dementia and their carers to organise the peer support they want in a variety of settings.
