1 Sample Personal Awareness Activity: Breaking the Ice
Camille O’Bryant Kinesiology

2 Points of Information Courses I teach When I use this “exercise”
Why I use it How I prepare students

3 The Exercise Setting the context What it includes
Debriefing the students Making sure to link back to it throughout the quarter

4 Personal Awareness Activity - Diversity and Social Justice
Personal awareness about various aspects of cultural diversity and social justice Increased understanding and awareness of privilege and/or disadvantage associated with cultural identities Setting a foundation for developing and embodying strategies for addressing points of tension, confusion and/or misunderstandings related to cultural diversity and social justice in sport settings.

5 Some Guidelines/Context
Interactive exercise to begin exploring past and present experiences with difference There are NO right or wrong answers Keep groundrules in mind as you talk with your partners Change partners each question Each person should take 2 minutes to respond to the questions on the following slides

6 The Questions Think about your experiences growing up and describe your experiences with or awareness about social and cultural diversity Think about your current life and describe your experiences with or awareness of social and cultural diversity How do you think issues of diversity impact your life now?

7 The Debrief What types of things did you learn about yourself and others as you responded to the questions? Social and cultural differences impact us all…especially in sport and physical activity socialization experiences There is much more to our social and cultural identity other than gender… Now it is time to explore intersections of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class….etc.

8 THESE ARE JUST A FEW EXAMPLES OF OUR MOSAICS OF IDENTITY
Mosaic of Identity Ethnicity Sexual Identity Age Class Race Religion Sex Ability Gender Identity/Expression THESE ARE JUST A FEW EXAMPLES OF OUR MOSAICS OF IDENTITY WHAT WOULD YOU ADD?

9 Privilege…Advantage…in Social Contexts
Assumption of entitlement to fair treatment on basis of individual merits Identification with decision-makers, power holders, information Shared understanding of institutional norms, values, processes, structures Assumption of safety and acceptance Access to institutional services that support success

10 Privilege is Unasked for Invisible Unearned
Can you think of examples? Unearned Available to members of “majority” group members in an organization Often mistaken for individual merit by “majority” group members “majority” group = “advantaged”/”status” group in society

11 Examples of “Privilege”
Ph.D. Privilege Male Privilege Straight Privilege White Privilege Please talk to a partner and see if you can identify other forms of “privilege” in this context.

12 The Social Injustice Equation:
Institutional Disadvantages for “Minorities” + Institutional Advantages for “Majorities” (privilege) = Social Injustice in “Organizations” Sport as an “institution” has many organizations that comprise it

13 Your Mosaic I encourage you to create your own mosaic and consider how various aspects of your social and cultural identities “put” you into positions of privilege (status) and/or positions of disadvantage.
