4. Objectives
Students will apply knowledge of plot structure by identifying examples of parallel plot in The Book Thief and analyze how plot helps to convey the meaning of the novel.
Students will analyze main characters by identifying how they are similar and different / how they challenge and support each other throughout the text.
Students will analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise.

5. Warm-Up
Death says – “I’m always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both.” (p.491)
What is the paradox within this quote?
Analyze this quote based upon it’s paradox. How can both things coexist? (possibly not only in our text – but in the real world as well)

6. Plot Structure in The Book Thief
Linear plot: narrative structure in which events are described in chronological order
Nonlinear plot: narrative structure in which events are described out of chronological order (often used to mimic the structure of human memory and/or establish tension within a narrative)

7. Evidence of nonlinear plot
Flashback: means by which an author presents material that occurred earlier than the present tense of a narrative
Foreshadowing: an author’s use of clues to suggest what will occur in a narrative
In media res: “in the middle of things”; an author’s choice to begin a story when the action has already started rather than at the exposition of the plot
Parallel plot: narrative structure in which two or more stories, often involving a common theme, are developed; the larger narrative may shift back and forth between the parallel stories

Choose 3 of the main characters to discuss
Written analysis – 3-5 sentences per character
In what ways do the two of main characters (from the three you choose) challenge and support each other? Give specific examples to support your ideas (use textual evidence) Use quotes or paraphrase and cite properly.
Write a well developed paragraph.
