What is… Write out the equation with the correct answer.
1. One-hundred multiplied by one-hundred? 100 x 100 = 10,000 2. One-million multiplied by one-million? 1,000,000 x 1,000,000 = 1,000,000,000,000 3. One-million divided by one-trillion? 1,000,000 / 1,000,000,000,000 =

That’s a lot of zeros! Very large and very small numbers are more easily written with scientific notation. Each answer in scientific notation is written as- 1.0x104 1.0x1012 1.0x10-6

Practice! Convert the following from standard form to correct scientific notation. Remember that any number LESS than zero will have a negative exponent when converted. 3,000 700 50,400 35 20 0.1 0.0006 20.1x10-2 684 Answers: 1.0x10-10 3.0x103 7.0x102 5.04x104 3.5x103 2.0x101 1.0x10-1 6.0x10-4 2.01x10-1 6.84x102

Practice! Convert each of the following numbers to standard notation. Remember that if the exponent is NEGATIVE, the decimal place is moved to the left. If the exponent is POSITIVE, the decimal place is moved to the right. 2.202x103 9.0x1012 5.0x108 3.3x10-1 4.40x105 1.0x100 7.99x10-2 8.001x10-3 3.001x10-4 1.12x105 Anwers: 9,000,000,000,000 2,202 0.33 500,000,000 1.0 440,000 0.0799 112,000

Answers in scientific notation please! Try to see if you can write it with the correct number of Significant figures! (3.0x102 )(4.5x10-3)= 7.01x108 / 7.0x102= 5.55x1010 / 6.10x105= (2.0x106)(1.0x10-4)= 1.35x100 With S.F. = 1.4x100 1.0x106 With S.F = same 9.098x104 With S.F. = 9.10x104 2.0x102 With S.F. = same
