1 DRIVERS ED PARENTS – WHAT’S NEXT?

2 Who is this guy? Ed Tharrington Math Department Co-Chair
At Wakefield all 16 years! 30th year in WCPSS What do I teach? Mostly – but not limited to – Math 3 and AP Statistics

3 DRIVERS ED CONSISTS OF TWO PARTS:
Classroom Instruction (the part we just finished) Behind the Wheel (BTW) – 6 hours of driving > Done in student pairs, taking turns, > So that’s 12 hours total > Done in sets of three or four hours a day, so BTW will last four or three days, in most cases > Might be Coach Cooley, Mr. Bliga, Mr. Bramble, or someone else After BOTH of these are finished, the student is considered to have completed Drivers Ed and is ready to move on to the next step…….

4 “Level 1 Limited Learner’s Permit” pg 1
Have to be at least 15 years old This involves a Written Test and a Sign Test at the DMV, but no actual driving. Must have passed both the Classroom and the Behind-The-Wheel portion of the Drivers Ed program

5 “Level 1 Limited Learner’s Permit” pg 2
Also…… A “supervising driver” MUST be in the front seat with the teenager with the Permit – no one else can sit in the front but these two people For the first six months of holding this Level 1 Limited Learner Permit, teens can only drive between the hours of 5am and 9pm.

6 “Level 1 Limited Learner’s Permit” pg 3
The “supervising driver” has to complete a driving log – 60 hours of supervised driving must be filled out. AFTER this Level 1 Limited Learner Permit is held for six months, the teenager may drive at any time (with the supervising driver) Yay! No family auto insurance changes are required this Permit; that comes in with the actual License.

7 The Driving Log

8 What should we take to the DMV in order to get the Level 1 Limited Learner’s Permit?
Original or certified copy of birth certificate Proof of Address Student’s social security card Student’s driver’s education certificate – given to the student when the Behind-The-Wheel (BTW) portion is completed Driver’s Eligibility Certificate – obtained from the WHS Student Services Dept after both parts of Drivers Ed have been completed (certifies that the student has passed 75% of his/her classes in the most recent semester) $20

9 “Level 2 Limited Provisional License” pg1
Yes, this is what we middle-aged folks used to call “GETTING YOUR LICENSE”! The teenager must be at least 16 years old. The Level 1 Learner’s Permit must be had for 1 full year before getting a license. The only exception is if the child turns 18; then the full license can be gotten at any time. The teen can only drive between hours of 5am and 9pm. There are a few state-mandated exceptions, like going to a job, a school event, etc.

10 “Level 2 Limited Provisional License” pg2
IF accompanied by a supervising driver (parent), there may be other people in the car, as long as the supervising driver is in the front seat. If the teen is NOT with the supervising driver, then only ONE other passenger under the age of 21 is allowed. This Limited Provisional Level 2 License must be held for 6 months without infraction before….

11 “Level 3 Full Provisional License” pg2
He/she gets the FULL Provisional Level 3 License! This is a NEW license, so you have to go to the Drivers License Office or do it by mail. Minimum age: 16.5 No restrictions on times, passengers, at this point – it’s FULL now!

12 DRIVERS ED SUMMARY – WHAT HAPPENS NEXT FOR MY CHILD?
Wait for Mr. Cooley to call you regarding Behind- The-Wheel driving. He will want to talk with a parent, not just the teen. Mr. Cooley will schedule these in reverse order of current age, beginning with the oldest kids in the class. Students in previous months’ classes will get to go first. So when will my child get to drive? The answer: probably not until at least May

13 What Happens Next – almost over
Each student in the class received a North Carolina Drivers Handbook; this should definitely be kept and studied for the tests for Permits and Licenses Each student also has a notebook with handouts, including a Final Exam study guide with several other study tips Mr. Cooley can be contacted about driving at Mr. Tharrington can be contacted at This PPT (as well as others) can be found (find me there).

14 THAT’S IT! A SUMMARY: Wait for Mr. Cooley to call you
me with any classroom questions Coach Cooley with any questions regarding driving, payments, etc. This PPT – along with all of the other ones we used in class – can be found at Thanks for coming!
