Cal/OSHA California Occupation Safety and Health Administration You have the right to a safe and healthful workplace! The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1973 was enacted by the California Legislature to assure safe and healthful working conditions for all California workers

3 Purpose of Cal/OSHA Enforce effective standards
Assist and encourage employers to maintain safe and healthful working conditions Provide for research, information, and training in the field of occupational safety and health

4 Teens at work: Each year approximately 3 – 5 million teenagers enter the workforce Over 230,000 are injured on the job each year About half are injured seriously enough to require a trip to the emergency room Young people are injured at twice the rate of adults on the job (one every 10 seconds) 70 teens die due to workplace injuries each year

5 Teen Labor Laws If you are under 18, it is NOT OK to:
Drive a vehicle as part of your job Use power equipment such as trash compactor, meat slicer, etc. Work where you are exposed to radiation Handle, serve, or sell alcohol Drive a forklift

6 Work Permits If you are under 18 AND still in school, you MUST have a work permit!

7 Teens’ Work Hours 4 hours maximum Monday-Thursday
8 hours maximum Friday, Saturday and Sunday No earlier than 5 am on any day No later than 10 pm on a school night No later than 12:30 am on a non-school night Maximum 48 hours per week No working between the hours of 12:30 am to 5 am 14 &15 year olds 3 hours on a school night Not before 7am and no later then 7 pm- Labor Day thru June 1st Not before 7am and no later then 9pm- June 1st thru Labor Day

Heavy Objects Sharp Objects Fire Slippery Floors Ladders Electrical Unsteady Racks Obstacles Clutter Over-filled racks Unorganized/Over-filled stock rooms Robbery

9 Back and Muscle Injuries
Lift with your Knees NOT your Back Hold loads close to your body Do not stack merchandise too high Do not carry more than you can handle! Maintain good posture

10 Ladder Safety Be sure ladder is fully opened and locked
Do not step on top step of ladder Be sure all ladder legs are on level, solid ground Do not climb on boxes, storage racks, etc. Do not overreach!

11 Box Cutter Safety Cut AWAY from your body Watch your fingers!
Do not walk around with the blade out Always hand sharp objects to others, handle-first Always retract blade when not in use Safely discard worn or rusted blades, DO NOT continue to use them

12 Housekeeping Clean up spills Dust, sweep, mop, and vacuum daily!
Keep walkways clear Keep cabinets & drawers closed Report any broken fixtures or damaged flooring to management immediately Dust, sweep, mop, and vacuum daily! Use anti-bacterial cleaners Secure electrical cords/wires from walkways Keep things tidy ALL day long!

13 Fire Safety Know location of exits
Know location of fire extinguishers Have an evacuation plan Keep 18” clearance around fire sprinklers Keep fire exits clear Assist customers to safety Store and dispose of flammable liquids safely Know how to operate fire extinguishers Know emergency phone numbers

14 Fire Safety at School Stay calm
TAs will take the emergency backpacks with us Exit class in a single file Listen to the teacher and/or the firemen Go straight to the designated area for this class Stay together, do not wander (roll will be taken) Once instructed, return to class in a orderly fashion

15 Earthquake Safety Remain Calm Know location of emergency exits
Seek shelter under an interior doorway Stay away from glass Watch for heavy falling objects Know location of emergency exits Have an evacuation plan Assist customers to safety Avoid elevators

16 Earthquake Safety at School
Remain Calm Seek shelter under your desk Stay away from glass Watch for heavy falling objects When the shaking stops, get back into your seat and it is important to remain quietly and wait for instructions. If instructed to evacuate, students will walk carefully to the designated area. DO NOT take off!! All students need to be accountable. We will return to the class when instructed TAs will take the emergency backpacks and duck and cover in the classroom to avoid falling objects in the store.

17 Robbery Prevention Greet all customers
Be aware of where customers are in the store Keep minimal amounts of cash in the drawer Close registers immediately after each sale Keep all store areas visible and well lit Don’t work alone

18 If You are Robbed: Remain calm Be able to describe weapon
Do not make any threatening moves Comply with robber’s demands Observe suspect and memorize any distinguishing features Be able to describe weapon Try to observe which direction suspect leaves (safely!) Try to get a vehicle description and license plate # (safely!)

19 After the Robbery… Call 911 immediately!! Lock doors
Try to remember as much about the suspect and events as possible in order to tell the police when they arrive (start to write things down as you remember)

20 In Case of Injury… Report ALL workplace injuries to a supervisor immediately!! (regardless of how small the injury may seem at the time) If a customer or co- worker gets hurt: Offer Assistance Stay calm Call 911 if necessary Stay with them until help arrives Notify supervisor Complete an Incident Report for ALL injuries!
