Coursework – LO1, Task 1 For each of the following types of graphics you need a written document that explains the following; - Why is this graphic used? - How are the graphics on this product used? DVD covers Magazine covers CD Covers Magazine advert Concept art Web Graphic E.g. DVD Covers Why are DVD covers used? DVD covers are used to advertise a film to the audience. They are there to show the audience the genre of the film which will then give an indication of whether they would want to buy it. They also give the audience a wide range of information about the film. How are these graphics used? Titles – These are on the DVD cover to tell the audience what the film is called which will in turn allow the audience to know what the film could be about. Blurb – Gives a synopsis of a film/ tv show so the audience are aware if it’s the type of film they would like to watch or n0t Characters – People like different actors – telling or showing who is in the film will enable people to further make a decision on whether to watch the film Certificate – With this course, the more you write about these different products, the higher the mark you will get.

Improvements to make Missing web links
You will have to go back over the work you have just completed and add in web links. This is to show the moderator that you have “acknowledged” where you have got images or information from. This can be added as URL link underneath each product or outlined in a table
14
The next step to complete LO1
Identifies a wide range of file types and formats, which are consistently appropriate to digital graphics.
15
Identifying a range of File Types
Find out what the following file types are: BITMAP VECTOR JPEG BMP TIFF GIF PDF PNG SVG
16
Image file types – 2 lessons
What to write about? Describe each file type – what is it, what are they used for? Discuss some advantages and disadvantages of each file type Where are the images used in the real world? Help: BBC Bitesize file formats & Google Search Bitmap advantages and disadvantages – Find the correct image. BITMAP VECTOR JPEG BMP TIFF GIF PDF PNG SVG
17
file types and formats Disadvantages Cant be compressed
What to write about? Describe each file type – what is it, what are they used for? Discuss some advantages and disadvantages of each file type Help: BBC Bitesize file formats & Google Search Bitmap advantages and disadvantages – Find the correct image. file types and formats Tiff - What is it? How/Where is it used? This is a lossless compression Used for digital editing High quality Images Any photo or scanned document can be saved as a TIFF BITMAP VECTOR JPEG BMP TIFF GIF PDF PNG SVG Advantages Edited with most photo editing software Most web browsers have built in “TIFF” recognition No loss of Images Quality when an image is saved as a TIFF Disadvantages Cant be compressed If it was it would lose it’s quality, being a lossy compression
18
Homework Task – Hand In Thursday 22nd September
Compare BITMAP to VECTOR Images Write a paragraph about BITMAP? Write a paragraph about VECTOR? Find an image that shows the difference between BITMAP and VECTOR (Image Quality) Find and write down approximately Advantages and Disadvantages of each
19
Features of Images Now you need to look into the properties of image files. You need to find out the following DPI Pixel Dimension Quality Settings Compression (Lossy & Lossless)
20
DPI DPI stands for Dots Per Inch which technically means printer dots per inch.
22
Pixel Dimension PIXEL DIMENSIONS are the horizontal and vertical measurements of an image expressed in pixels. The pixel dimensions may be determined by multiplying both the width and the height by the dpi.
23
Quality Settings Using photo shop/fireworks
Change quality settings: Low or High What would a low image be used for? (Personal use, attachment) What would a High image be used for? – professional use (poster, billboard, high end graphics (CD Cover))
24
Compression Lossy and Lossless Compression
25
Task 3 1. Find out and describe : - DPI - Pixel Dimensions
Quality Settings Compression 2. Use Images to back up the research. 3. Show how image quality settings can be manipulated in fireworks with screenshots
26
Connection between digital graphics and suitability of Use.
Before any project gets started, there is a lot of consideration given to how the Digital Graphic will look. With every product audience and purpose is KEY Let’s look at this poster and see how it meets the purpose and audience
27
Audience – Action film, aimed at boys/men, or anyone who is interested in Action and Comics Colour: - Background – City, war, action, dull colours - Bold/stand out colours – Iron man (main character), Captain America Shield, Green of Hulk, Cape of Thor - Exposure – Explosion in the background, Debris and destruction around
28
Actors/Actresses Mainly male actors, which may suggest a push towards male audience. Likewise this could be seen as a link to female audience who like to see men in uniform Female actress is beautiful, and has a deadly side to her, which is appealing. Body shape, image is appealing to men in this case
29
Title – Bold, sharp and edgy
Title – Bold, sharp and edgy. The marvel logo is bold, red/white, which is catchy and easy to remember. Another emphasis on Iron mans hand, to imply he is ready to fire. This appeals to the audience as it gives off an action packed, adrenaline rollercoaster and destructive feel.
30
CD Cover Background– Bright colour yellow used, draws the audience in. Eye catching. Also kids make links to how the writing is shown. (Possible butterfly embedded into the word “Of”) Audience – Children. The use of the child singing on the front will appeal to them Multicolours Title– Use of Child like writing and emphasis on “kids” music collection Feel– The singing child on the front looks happy, who will lean into the audience and they will feel happy listening to this too. Imagery– The musical note on the t shirt may encourage children as they can associate this CD cover to music
31
Your Task Explain the connection between digital graphics and their suitability of use for 2 x DVD covers, 2 x CD covers & 2 x magazine or film posters Talk about the following: 1. Colours used 2. Imagery (logos, company’s) 3. Actors/Actresses 4. Title 5. Background 6. Layout Always remember to link to Audience and Purpose when discussing each point
32
The brief – LO2 Your client, a game publisher called NuComputerGames, is releasing a computer game called TIMECHASER, aimed at year olds and priced at £ In the game the player can travel through time using doorways which are open for a limited period of time. The player has a special Timewatch to help them find the doorways. NuComputerGames plan to promote this game through an advertisement in a magazine which is available in print and online formats. This should be created as a digital graphic and should include a range of appropriate text and images to make it suitable as an advertisement for the game. NuComputerGames requires two versions of the final digital graphic. One will be of suitable quality to be used in a full colour printed magazine and will be a half page advertisement of 215 mm wide x 140 mm high. The graphic should then be re-purposed for use online at a lower resolution. This should be 600px wide to fit the online format.
33
LO2 – Planning the creation of your Digital Graphic
Read the client brief and interpret this, by writing it down in your own words.
34
Target Audience Using the headings below you will write about the target audience including specific sub categories: Age Gender Location (Where in the world will this be advertised?) Ethnicity Social Class (Students, teenagers, working class) Lifestyle (Availability as multi-platform device; console, phone, PC)
35
