Addition and subtraction in EYFS
Finds the total number of objects in two groups by counting all of them. Finds and says the number that is one more or one less from a group of objects or given number. In practical activities and discussions, begin to use vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting Records using marks they can interpret and explain Begin to identify own mathematical problems based on their own interests. Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

The beginnings… Saying numbers names – randomly first then in sequence
Beginning to understand meaning of number (“give me one, give me two”) Later, counting out a specific number of objects from a large group. Know that numbers identify how many objects are in a set (1, 2, 3, 4… there are 4 teddies!) Comparing quantities, using language e.g. “more”, “a lot”. Whether they are the same. Knowing a group of objects changes in quantity when you add or take away. Begin to represent numbers – e.g. with fingers, marks, pictures, Spot numbers in the environment, e.g. their door number. Know that anything can be counted – even claps, jumps and things you can’t move, including those in an irregular arrangement. Says one number name for each object. Recognise 0-9 and Matches numeral for the correct quantity. Separate a group of objects in different ways, knowing the total is still the same.
