1 Hugh Hodgson School of Music 6 September 2016
Faculty Meeting Hugh Hodgson School of Music 6 September 2016

2 Announcements Faculty and staff award nominations
Please nominate yourself or your colleagues. Dates for faculty nominations are in October and November. Staff awards are in the spring. Academic Calendar (meetings, etc.) – on “calendar” link soon: The current Academic Calendar is not well located on Maestro. With changes in the campus-wide scheduling, management of this additional calendar is proving problematic. We propose creating a new Google Calendar link, which Faculty can link to. In Maestro under the Calendar tab, we will post PDFs for the semester as well as a list of meetings and meeting dates. Staff transition to non-exempt employees Per federal guidelines, some School of Music employees will be reclassified from exempt to non-exempt status, requiring they work a standard 40 hour work week and a bi-weekly paycheck (rather than monthly). Any overtime would need to be approved and at present, Franklin has not authorized this. If needed, staff may be allowed comp time. This will begin in November. Collage Concert – please submit ideas Speak with Dale if you have ideas. Please encourage students to submit proposals to perform. There are only a small number of submissions at present. Budget Support from UGA This is in reference to the Music Program Fee we have discussed in the past. This process is still working through the UGA system. It possibly not be completed this year. New Spending Initiative – status report The Area Chairs Committee will work out a process for accepting proposals for consideration. This will be sent out to the full faculty once it is established. Faculty Searches – information by next week Franklin College has indicated it will get back with the School of Music within the next week or so concerning approval for searches for this academic year for those areas with limited term faculty members: piano, music education, composition.

3 Reports Pete Jutras Research and Graduate Studies
It is time start considering admissions and recruiting. Decision Desk is now live for Undergraduate and Graduate student applications. Faculty should have the same log on as last year and new faculty should have received log on information. Please try logging in now to see if there are any issues. Contact Chris Hallum, if there are. It is time to select audition dates for graduate students, particularly any students you think have the academic credentials to be considered for UGA graduate school assistantships. These have early deadlines, so it is imperative that these students be recruited early so that they can be considered for these positions. Think about TA needs for next year. Now is the time to talk if there are any changing needs, etc. Contact Pete for support with travel funding and grants. Today is the deadline for proposals for McCay funding. Once these are in, a committee will be formed to make selections. 4 HHSOM Bylaws Discussion and vote:
Concerns about voting rights for the Performance Coordinator (III.D.1). Since this is an appointed position and not an elected position, faculty supported this as an ex-officio position. This item was removed. Questions were asked as to the change in area name from Keyboard to Piano. Since there is no longer an organ teacher and there are no organ students, the area felt this was more representative of the area. Change was allowed to stand. All other edits presented were approved by voice vote.

19 The HHSOM Career Center

20 Career Center What are the functions of the career center?
Teach courses in career options, professional preparation and job applications, entrepreneurship, music business concerns Assist with the preparation of professional dossiers, CVs, etc. Lead the HHSOM effort in connecting with alumni What are the desired qualifications of the Career Center Director? See notes below. Dale will pitch this with Franklin College soon. Ideas presented by faculty: compile/collect opportunities for students (clearinghouse for jobs); place to post positions/awards, etc.; connect to actual performance opportunities outside of school (helping students get these positions); have music industry/business connections; clarify what services would still be through the UGA Career Center and what would the HHSOM center provide; see this person teaching classes such as the Music in the Real World class, etc.; often people in this position are arts administration/managers or they are actual performers – basically these people have gathered the experiences we want our students to get; salary will dictate the level of skills of the person hired; need to understand the full range of our student body agree this person has lots of challenges – some things could be brought in to the curriculum, as discussed at the faculty meeting… items such as CVs, etc. This person would be giving students support in the development of portfolios, CVs, etc., but not actually writing them. This office could be a clearinghouse to store these types of files for students to request. Since it is tied to student activities, could the school get some support from the Student Activities Fees? Will look into this possibility. Other schools have recently hired people in this area – research what they did, what language did they use to describe the position, salary paid, etc. Concerns: This will be challenging for one person to do. (Dale anticipates this would be an Academic Professional position, since it will require some teaching. He sees this as an initial 3-4 year commitment with longer-term goals based on the first years of implementation). Alumni would seem to fall under development not Career Center. Dale: The initial thought was that, since the students this person is working with will become alumni, it would be a natural segue. This will be considered more. Some faculty were comfortable with the idea of this person keeping in touch/updating alumni, but nothing related to fundraising or development. This person should have some type of TA support to provide administrative help.
