3 To ask for and give information about the family and family relationships
Cultural Note: Asking for and giving information about whether the members of one’s family are Deaf or hearing is a common cultural and social practice. Deaf people believe information such as this can contribute to understanding something about an individual and the individual’s place among Deaf people.

4 To ask for and give information about the family and family relationships
Family Information Alex: MY FAMILY GATHER-TOGETHER TOMORROW. NOT-YET GATHER-TOGETHER SINCE TWO YEAR. Chris: FAMILY DEAF? Alex: PARENTS DEAF. SISTER DEAF. TWO BROTHER, ONE DEAF, ONE HEARING. Chris: BROTHER HEARING, SIGN? Alex: OF-COURSE!

5 To ask for and give information about the family and family relationships
Cultural Note: Establishing whether hearing members of a Deaf person’s family sign is part of finding out something about the Deaf person’s experience. The conversation above has an interesting twist: Gloria’s family is Deaf except for a hearing brother, so it is slightly ironic for Maria to ask if he can sign. Gloria’s response of “Of course!” indicates the importance of sign to the family.
