ECO-ISLAND CHALLENGE

One beautiful Monday morning, five tourists and a captain set sail on a tour of islands. The trip was planned to last one week. After three days at sea, the group ran into rough seas that set them off course. Attempts to contact the U.S. Coast Guard failed, because winds ripped the radio antenna from the top of the boat and sent it out to sea. After 2 horrible days on the water, the group came upon a small island. As darkness fell, they were able to direct the boat into a lagoon. Everyone left the boat which was left tied to a tree. The group ran quickly toward some distant cliffs and, after about minutes, found shelter in a large cave.

Day 2 The next morning, they hiked back down to the lagoon to find themselves in a very difficult situation. The ship was underwater. The radio, flares, food, water, and other supplies were all destroyed. The captain quickly organized the group to spend the next few hours exploring the island to search for food, water, wood, and shelter. If they found food, they were to bring enough back to eat for that day. Then, they would form a plan for getting off the island.

Discovery: Four hours later, all of the group had returned. They made the following discoveries: The Captain, named Kim, and Kelly stayed at the lagoon for a few minutes to examine the boat. They discovered that the boat was not damaged, but it needed to be pulled up on shore and cleaned out. That job could be competed by nightfall. They would be able to sail the ship again, but it would have to be restocked with food for the 5-day return to the mainland. They then went to the North. They found a banana jungle near some rocky cliffs. Lynn collected banana while Kim decided to fish off of the cliffs. After a few minutes of work, Kim had caught 12 fish and Lynn had collected a bunch of 36 bananas.

Billy walked around the shore of the Island
Billy walked around the shore of the Island. He discovered that the island was in the shape of an oval with the lagoon cutting into one side (see the map). It was approximately 1 mile long and ½ mile wide. Tony traveled East to explore near the cave they had discovered the night before. He carried with him 2 six gallon water jugs he had recovered from the boat. Just a short walk from the cave, he found a fresh water spring with plenty of water for the needs of the group. There was also a small pool of water that would be great for bathing and washing. He filled both jugs and carried them down to the lagoon.

Lynn and Jordan walked South and discovered a wooded forest and a coconut grove. Lynn climbed the coconut trees and was quickly able to gather 12 coconuts while Jordan gathered 12 bundles of wood. Together, they carried the items back to the lagoon. None of the castaways found any animals living on the island. There were a few birds.
