5 Major Projects National Monitoring Programmes Waterways Ireland
Habitats Directive (Irish Red Data Book) Water Framework Directive National Eel Monitoring Programme CL attainment Celtic Sea Trout (100 catchments...sea surveys) Waterways Ireland Invasive Species River Rehabilitation (OPW, Salmon Conservation Fund) Laboratory analysis Partnerships (UCD, UCC, QUD..) National Aquatic Archive While I would like to take more time to take this group through each project and try to do the work justice time will not permit..instead i’ve extracted some of the larger projects and in a few words would like to summaries the key elements. Firstly, despite the financial state of the nation and the recruitment embargo the largest fish monitoring program every undertaken in the state is well advanced, with national monitoring programmes taking place under the WFD, HD NEelM Cl attaiment Celti Sea trout projects. This will result in every major catchment, and a number of sites on each catchment being surveyed at least once every three years.....these project teams are also tuned into the requirement of sharing data and samples in order to try an meet requirements in the most efficient fashion. The habitats directive is tasked with monitor the status of Annex 2 fish stocks Pollan, shad, lamprey and salmon while we have also included survey work on Char and smelt. This project has a six year reporting cycle with the first monitoring report completed for The WFD 2009 was the 3rd year year of a 3 year sampling sampling programme 187 rivers, 73 lakes, 42 transitional waters

Legislation What will it mean? River Basin Districts Research Access to a national organisation National policy development Scientific committees to advise on policy Further legislation (pending) Legislation: now through the Dail 5th report stage moving towards the Senate, will formally transfer powers from the Central & Regional Fisheries Board to IFI, this is just like a consolidation act retain all our powers and to ensure that we can operation of the day of vested, expect in mid April. The new organisation will have in a completment of over 420 staff, distributed through each catchment. The element of legislation will form the new management structure which will move from 7 regional units to the 6 river basin districts (on of which is an international RBD). The current research function has a national remit but the consolidation of the boards will ensure that we will future work can be planned in a strategic was having access to regional expertise. This will also support further partnerships with other research organisations on a national level. We also will have the opportunity to develop national policy, for example in Bio-security, Invasive species, Stocking etc.... The following detailed IFI legislation will enable some of these policies to be enacted into law!!!! The current legisation also provided for the development of Scientific Committies to be enacted, which can included scientists from other agencies which are designed to offered scienctific advice, for example their currently exists national scientific advisory groups looking at eel and salmon which supported management in advice required for the changes implemented in relation to those species..... These new groups which the details of structure and terms of reference ect.. have not be defined will report to the IFI organisation.
