5 Culture High levels of cultural engagement Museum and archive attendance is increasing The North East has a high spend on culture Tourism data shows that the region is attracting many visitors However, Arts participation and attendance is relatively low Participation in sport – exercise and volunteering – is lower than the English average

6 Environment River water and bathing water quality is significantly better than the national average The region has high levels of domestic energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions per capita… … but air pollution is relatively low The North East is one of only three regions to see increases in wild bird populations – a good indication of the broad state of wildlife

12 PLACE Higher quality of life than other regions based on several ‘Place’ indicators Better air quality, and river and bathing quality – and a smaller ecological footprint Car crime and burglary levels are low, there is a lower fear of crime and a higher rate of police officers The region is attracting increasing numbers of visitors – and the population has a high level of cultural engagement However – this positive picture is contrasted by comparatively high levels of deprivation in parts of the North East
