18/04/2018 OUTLINE Decades of Momentum of investment in People safety transport movement and road infrastructure We have a revolution in data creation and capture This will cause creative disruption (Schumpeter REF): this has started We present a possible unified view of these opportunities DISCUSS PROCESS.  We thought it was timely to open this discussion with you.  To present some highly relevant developments we are seeing in key projects we are involved in the USA at present AND Present some examples of where we are delivering on other new technology concepts like the internet of things here in Australia This is to start of a conversation.  We have been active in the are of ITS for many years but thought is an important point in time to start this wider discussion with you This is a 2 way process.  Today we want to share some 10 minute presentations with you before starting this discussion. The AGENDA TODAY IS AS FOLLOWS  - SHOW SLIDE We are keen to continue this discussion with you after today We will be drafting a white paper  and presenting updates on this material later this year and next year We look forward to your feedback and continuing to share these ideas with you

5 Soft Vehicles, Soft Roads, Soft Transport three areas running in parallel need a coherent perspective These issues are the same as Smart cities Age friendly cities (WHO) Resilient cities ITS is further ahead in policy and practice within its own domain. However,... The problem is that all of these overlapping domains see that they are in the same position Each group has a different range of disciplines and modes of governance and accountability This divergence is no longer possible with the convergence of sensing and data in domains

6 Soft Vehicles, Soft Roads, Soft Transport SofT VEHICLES
Presenting opportunity: Electrification – PTWs / hybrids New materials Externalities like Congestion Options / sharing - pods – graphics – mum and dad, add as you go Challenges Lack of vision …. Being Human (Sydney opera house) Our needs as Regulation Environment Attitudes

7 Soft Vehicles, Soft Roads, Soft Transport three areas running in parallel need a coherent perspective Soft roads Mention water ex. (monitoring water tables – truck restriction) Bridges and tunnels monitoring, maintenance and management Future consideration of platoons and dynamic responses of bridge platforms to meet changes in vehicle design – need to inform standards Diversion and re-routing Pavement design to meet enhanced lateral control capabilities Dynamic capacity management – time and space Mode Temporal Optimisation of capacity

9 Soft Vehicles, Soft Roads, Soft Transport three areas running in parallel need a coherent perspective Source: : “Road” is now full carriageway including paths, tracks and kerb space and connectivity

11 Soft Vehicles, Soft Roads, Soft Transport three areas running in parallel need a coherent perspective Soft Transport Goods and people movement now overlap with services Delivery substitution Goods vehicles aren’t just goods vehicles anymore (uber & dominos pizza) 4th Party Logistics 4th layer of logistics management (highly information intensive) Growth of service industries People We are now instrumented and will make us part of the vehicle / road complex and we need to plan for this HUD and vehicle interaction in motorcycle helmet Accessibility: be aware you are where you have been – Wigan and Clarke Dynamic and an asset being sold contextually usable and VERY saleable Privacy and surveillance must be handled more openly with the community

12 Soft Vehicles, Soft Roads, Soft Transport three areas running in parallel need a coherent perspective CONCLUSION We have raised a wide range of practical developments in each area The three major domains interact very strongly We have limited time to develop policy and governance frameworks to account for this Adaptability of policy, governance and legal systems are demonstrably too slow to take advantage of our new data driven opportunities It is clear that more carefully crafted scenarios are needed to make these issues concrete for community

13 Soft Vehicles, Soft Roads, Soft Transport three areas running in parallel need a coherent perspective Other things we did not consider here.... Iot will have a huge impact on connection between homes, offices, retail activity, vehicles, energy, services and the resulting saleable information Insufficient attention has been paid to security standards, this is a considerable risk to transport systems addresses of authors:
