1 Design Your Life chapter 8
Noura AlShowair Maram AlDukhayyil Lujain AlZunaid

2 Main points Fate or freedom. Dual logic of experience.
Self deception insight and analyzed experience. Facing Contradictions and inconsistencies. Social Forces, the Mass Media, and Our Experience Reading backwards Implication For Design Of Your Life Fate or freedom. Dual logic of experience

3 Fate or Freedom: Which do you choose
Fate: Life is a pre-determined product of forces over which a oneself has no control. The very idea of Freedom: 1) There's a significant difference between life as it is typically lived and life as it might be lived. 2) By deliberately changing our thinking than we uncritically allow our thinking to be shaped.

4 Recognizing the dual logic of experience
Experience is a reciprocal relationship between 2 factors: Objective factor and subjective factor

5 Self deception insight and analyzed experience

6 Facing Contradictions and inconsistencies
Analyzing experiences in a rational meaning. Know your irrational meaning and thoughts by: Finding the reasons behind these thoughts. Asking why they seemed true and insightful. Observing the changing in his thoughts. As what Nora said analyzing our experiences is very important .. But what more important is to know how to analyze in a rational way without any irrational judgments. And the way to do that is to develop your insights Insights are an important part in separating your rational and irrational meanings. Knowing your irrational thoughts will help you to learn how to talk, think and analyze insightfully….. For instance, to a prejudiced person, an unprejudiced person seems prejudiced…. but if the person knew the domain in which he’s biased that will help him to find a way of being unbiased by understanding how he became prejudiced ? How that prejudice seemed true at that time ? How he slowly came up with new thought and new opinion. And that will provides more insight into our way of thinking.

7 Questions should be asked in analyzing experiences :
What are the raw facts? What is the most neutral description of the situation? What interests, attitudes, desires, or concerns do I bring to the situation? How am I conceptualizing the situation in light of my point of view? How else might it be interpreted? Did my point of view, values or believes affect what I noticed about the situation? If it yes how did they prevent me from noticing the other things ? Would my understanding change if I had noticed the other things? How did my point of view, desires affect my interpretation? How should I interpret the situation? Succeeding in changing your irrational thought will provide the insight essential to self-honesty.

8 Social Forces, the Mass Media, and Our Experience
The Influence of the Mass Media. How to counteract the influence of the media over our lives. Becoming critical thinkers. Delusions are sometimes rampant in our thinking and usually by the mass media. They pay billions just to influence our way of giving meanings to things. The news media for example, they got a huge affect on how we interpret the world. They create friend and enemy! They tell us who to admire and who to scorn! they draw our world view for us! Thus, we cannot be critical thinkers if we accept this influence. To face this influence we must learn how to see through them and seek for resources other than national media. We must read widely and think critically

9 What do you think “Reading Backwards mean?
