7 Reformation The Reformation was an attempt to rid the Catholic church of corruption & abuse and to make religious practices available to every man & woman by making music in the common language. Led by Martin Luther, who wanted people to participate in the service rather than listen to chants by clergy or choir. Luther wrote hymns or “chorales” 7

8 Counter-Reformation Counter-Reformation was led by the Catholic Church to revive Catholic principles Polyphonic music was further developed 8

9 Printing Music began to be printed around 1473 using carved woodblocks
1501 – 1st printing of polyphonic music, using movable type. As printed music was more accessible, people learned to read music, to sing & to play instruments. 9
