What is An Interactive Notebook
A interactive notebook (INB) is your own personalized DIARY of learning about science A portfolio of your work in ONE convenient spot. This is great for studying for upcoming quizzes & test A great ORGANIZATIONAL tool that gives you permission to be PLAYFUL AND CREATIVE in your responses without "messing up" your notes. Allows you to be like a REAL SCIENTIST! Science Notebook

Left Side-Right Side: WHICH SIDE?
The notebook is divided into TWO sections. Left Side-Right Side: WHICH SIDE? The Left SIDE “LOVES” student work. This is the side that you can use to show me your creativity. This is the “output” or product side. The Right side is “RESTRICTED” and contains only information given by Ms. Green. This is designated the “THROUGH” page because you are doing this throughout the class. Nothing else should be placed on the RIGHT SIDE!!

Decomposer Producer Consumer
The notebook is divided into TWO sections. LEFT side “loves” STUDENT work = OUTPUT RIGHT side is “restricted” to TEACHER INPUT Input: Fill in the missing word. Decomposer Producer Consumer Plants are ____. Lions, tigers, and bears are ____. Worms and mushrooms are____

LEFT SIDE: YO SIDE ODD PAGES =1, 3, 5, 7, 9…YOU GOT IT..
The LEFT SIDE belongs to you. It contains your Input question and the day’s output section. On this page you may include diagrams, cartoons, drawings, poems, foldables, etc. Let your CREATIVITY go wild! ODD PAGES =1, 3, 5, 7, 9…YOU GOT IT..

The DAY’S OUTPUT is placed on the LEFT side of the notebook.
INCLUDES: Input Output Input: Fill in the missing word. Decomposers Producers Consumers Plants are _________. Lions, tigers, and bears are ________. Worms and mushrooms are_________

Fill in the missing word. Decomposer Producers Consumers
Input: Fill in the missing word. Decomposer Producers Consumers Plants are _________. Lions, tigers, and bears are ________. Worms and mushrooms are_________ The TOP of the left side of the paper is where the INPUT will go. This “warm-up” is either on the whiteboard or on Powerpoint. It acts as a review or thought provoking question before the start of class and should be completed within the first FIVE minutes of class
12
The day’s OUTPUT is placed on the left side of the notebook below the INPUT section. This section acts as a reinforcement for the RIGHT “THROUGH”side. This side entails hands on, tactile learning LEFT SIDE

What Students Are Saying About ISNs
"Always update your table of contents so papers don't get messed up - or in case of an ISN check.“ "An ISN is a great tool, keep it organized!“ "You have to spend quality time on your ISN.“ “Ms. Green, I’m really glad you made me do this because it has helped me stay organized this year.” "Don't leave your ISN until the last day, otherwise you may be up to the early morning hours finishing assignments.“ "Colorize things. It looks so much better that way” "Keep it in order, because you never know when a notebook check might come up.“ “Because of my notebook, studying for the EOC was a breeze. Everything was in order from start to finish!”

Make a Title Page for Your Notebook
Include your name Morning Group and time of class (M/W, 1st) College Class (111 or 110) College Lab Day Biology Lab Day (HS) Add color when you have more time.
25
STEP 1 Starting with the 1st page, number the first 50 pages. The 1st page is 0. Numbers should be small and at the top outside corner of every page. 2 1 AUTHORS TITLE PAGE I will give you blank “Table of Content” pages that follow your title page. They will NOT be numbered.
26
STEP 2 Follow my directions on the board for what goes on the next few pages. It will include the syllabus, notebook setups, etc. 3 4 5 6
27
TABLE OF CONTENTS DATE DESCRIPTION PAGE #
28
NOTEBOOK RULES.. No DOODLING that doesn’t relate to science
Notebook should only be used for HS BIOLOGY CLASS ONLY and Biology Lab DATE AND NUMBER each page All entries must go into the Table of Contents Do not rip out pages from your notebook. Pretend they are permanent. Real scientists do not rip out their pages. BE COLORFUL & LOVE YOUR NOTEBOOK
29
Grading of Notebooks I will tell you when I am grading notebooks. There should be no surprises. Typically they are graded 3-4 times a nine weeks. Not every assignment in your NB will receive a grade. You will place the “to be” graded pages in a pocket folder along with the Table of Contents (TOC). When returned you will place those pages back in your NB in chronological order.
30
To help you: I will be giving each of you a pocket folder
Some notebook paper “hole” re-inforcers Some “post-it/stickie” flags Classroom supplies include: tape, glue, colored pencils, markers, scissors, highlighters, a 3-hole punch, etc (Supplies are limited) Even though you will have a 3 ring binder, some materials will be glued or taped into your NB.
