Who was Amelia Earhart? Amelia Earhart was a famous aviator, which means she flew planes. She was most for being the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean by plane by herself.

Birth: Amelia Earhart was born in 1897 in Atchison, Kansas.

Childhood: Amelia grew up with her father Edwin, who was a lawyer and her younger sister, Muriel. As a child, Amelia loved to go on adventures with her sister. They played sports and collected things such as insects and frogs. She saw her first airplane at the age of 11 but did not yet have an interest in flying.

Adulthood: Amelia had a hard time deciding on what she wanted to do with her life. After graduating from high school, Amelia went to Ogontz School in Pennsylvania. She dropped out to become a nurse’s aide in World War 1. She studied to become a mechanic. Next, she went back to school to study medicine. Then, she decided to get into medical research- until she took her first plane flight. This made her realize she knew she had to fly. She worked hard to take flying lessons and purchased her first plane- a yellow airplane she named Canary. She also got her pilot’s license and set a new altitude record for female pilots of 14,000 feet. She married George Putman in 1931.

Death: On July 2,1937, Amelia and her copilot Frederick J. Noonan tried to fly around the world. Her plane was lost somewhere between New Guinea and Howland Island. Her plane was never recovered and her death remains a mystery. She was officially declared dead on January 5, 1939. Amelia died doing what she loved.

Fun Facts: Amelia had the nicknames Meeley and Miller.
Amelia married her book publisher in 1931. A lighthouse was built to honor Amelia Earhart on Howland island.
