Oneness Pentecostalism of David K. Bernard
What Exactly is the Trinity? Points of Agreement with the Trinity Points of Disagreement with the Trinity False Assumptions of David K. Bernard Some Other Oneness Arguments False Facts by David K. Bernard Bernard’s Basic Contradiction Reasons the Trinity is True vs. Oneness
2
Clement of Rome to the Corinthians (1 Clement) ch.42 p.16 (97/98 A.D.)
"Christ therefore was sent forth by God, and the apostles by Christ. Both these appointments, then, were made in an orderly way"
3
Polycarp’s Letter to the Philippians ch.12 p.35 (c.163 A.D.)
"But may the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ Himself, who is the Son of God, and our everlasting High Priest, build you up in faith and truth, and in all meekness, gentleness, patience, long-suffering, forbearance, and purity;… believe in our Lord Jesus Christ, and in His Father, who raised Him from the dead.'"
4
Epistle of Ignatius to the Smyrmaeans ch.8 p.89 (107 or 116 A.D.)

5
Pastor of Hermas book 3 ch.6 p.35 (160 A.D.)
"He himself, then, having purged away the sins of the people, showed them the paths of life by giving them the law which he received from His Father." … And why the Lord took His Son as counselor, and the glorious angels,…"
6
Irenaeus Against Heresies ch.18 p.546 (180-188 A.D.)
"The Father is indeed above all, and He is the Head of Christ; but the Word is through all things, and is Himself the Head of the Church; while the Spirit is in us all, and He is the living water,"
7
Luke 3:21-22 "When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, 'You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.'” (NKJV)
8
What Exactly Is the Trinity?
One God Subordinationism (JW’s etc.) Modalism (Oneness) Three Persons Co-Equal Polytheism (Mormons, etc.)
9
Where Bernard’s Oneness and the Trinity Agree
There is only One God The Father, the Son, and the Spirit are God The Three are Inseparable in Some Ways Three are Equal in Nature, Honor, and our worship The Three differ in role The Son is deity incarnated in humanity Cannot say the Father is the Son (p.197)
10
Points of Disagreement
Jesus is the Father (p.66) There is a “threeness” in Scripture (p ) No New Testament concept of the Trinity (p.171) Co-equal in a Similar Way as a Father and Son The Three are Distinct in Some Ways Differ in Rank in a Similar Way as a Father and Son Jesus had two wills; prayer was only from the human will (p.177, p.66 2nd part) God pre-existed prior to the Incarnation, but the “Son” did not. (p nd part) Not the Son prior to the incarnation (p.182)
11
False Assumptions of David K. Bernard
Distinction would require inferiority to the Father (p.176) One name must mean only one being (p.136) If Jesus prayed as a divine person, then He was not truly God (p.176, p.66 2nd part) Jesus was only begotten on earth (John 3:16) Father means only Father of all Creation (Mal 2:10; Heb 12:9) When multiple persons in the godhead had a role in something (such as raising Jesus), then that proves they are identical. Sonship is temporary; it will cease to exist. (p )
12
Yet Hebrews 13:8 Says "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (NIV, NKJV)
13
Other Oneness Arguments
Isaiah 9:6 Baptized in the name of Jesus vs. Mt 28:19
14
False Facts by Bernard Tertullian was 1st to use the term Trinity (p.268) Egyptians, Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists all have a Trinity (p ) Hislop was a reputable Trinitarian scholar (p.264) Sabellianism equivalent to modern Oneness (p.324) Clement of Rome, Polycarp, Ignatius, Shepherd of Hermas, Irenaeus believed Oneness (p.88, 2nd part)
15
Bernard’s Basic Contradiction
Bernard says that the Jesus is not the Father, but the deity of the Son is the Father Bernard says Jesus must be the name of the Father. Jn 5:43; Heb 1:4 Bernard also says Jesus is the name of the Holy Spirit. John 14:26 (p.137) If Jesus is not the same as the Father (since Jesus has humanity), than baptizing in the name of Jesus (fully God and fully man) cannot be baptizing in the name of the Father. Under the name of “Jesus only”, they deny being baptized in all of Jesus.
16
Some Reasons the Trinity is True vs. Oneness
Distinct Simultaneous Roles Voice vs. ventriloquism act Prayer vs. mumbling to yourself Interceding, blasphemy, Forsaken at the cross Sent from the Father On earth less than the Father Father Loves the Son John 3:35; 5:20; 15:7; 17:24 Father Loved Jesus before the foundation of the world John 17:24 In Heaven, the God of Jesus 1 Cor 15:28
