1 IEEE Computer Society Special Technical Communities (STCs)
Introduction to STCs, what they are, and where are they going, how to get involved. November 29, 2016 Bruce McMillin, STC Governing Executive Committee Chair 2016

2 What is an STC? Building global, interactive communities around important areas of interest to the Computer Society Agile communities of computing professionals sharing a common interest Technical Geographical Career A variety of others 29 Nov 2016

3 History of STCs 2010 “Instant communities” proposed to alleviate rigidity and boundaries under rapidly changing needs. key strategies with 10 pilots. 2013 STCs codified as self-sustaining (revenue-generating) agile entities easy to create and organize, develop new products and services 2014 STCs moved under Membership and Geographical Activities 29-Nov-2016

4 STCs from 2015 Many online communities producing newsletters and hosting social networking sites Have reached into new areas (social networking, e-government, enterprise architecture, smart computing, social networking). Several on the ground activities that have expanded our base (next slide) 29-Nov-2016

7 Relationship with Technical Committees (TCs)
There are three kinds of STCs STCs that are similar to TCs STCs that expand IEEE CS’s scope STCs that cover multiple TC domains (See Hausi Muller’s March 31 Webinar on Conferences and TCs) 29-Nov-2016

11 IEEE Computers, Software, and Applications
STCs on the Ground IEEE Computers, Software, and Applications Since 1976 Symposia & Congresses ECPE: Embedded & Cyber-Physical Environments SETA: Software Engineering Technology and Applications TAIN: Technologies and Applications of the Internet SEPT: Security, Privacy and Trust in Computing MOWU: Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Computing WEDA: Web Technologies & Data Analytics HCSC: Human and Social Computing NATA: Novel Applications and Technology Advances in Computing CELT: Computer Education and Learning Technologies ITiP: IT in Practice We have the following 18 STCs listed on  STC Big Data STC Broadening Participation STC Cloud STC Cybersecurity STC Education STC eGOV STC Enterprise Architecture STC Haptics STC Human Computation STC Internet of Everything STC Multicore STC Operating Systems STC SmartGrid STC Smart Computing STC Social Networking STC Sustainable Computing STC Systems Engineering STC Wearable & Ubiquitous Technologies Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing ISPDC 2016) International Conference on eDemocracy & eGovernment (ICEDEG/ICEDEM 2016/2017) 2016 IEEE International Conference on Learning and Teaching in Computing and Engineering (LaTiCE 2016) International Conference on Information Science and Security (ICISS 2015/2016) 2016 6th International Conference on IT Convergence and Security (ICTITCS 2016) Cyber Conflict Conference (CyCon US 2016) Equity & Sustained Participation (RESPECT 2016) 2016 IEEE International Forum on Smart Grids for Smart Cities (SG4SC)

12 STCs from 2015 – What has evolved?
Many online communities producing newsletters and hosting social networking sites Have reached into new areas (social networking, e-government, enterprise architecture, smart computing, social networking). Several on the ground activities that have expanded our base There is a desire (particularly for academics) to produce archival publications and to have face-to-face meetings The IEEE/CS platform Collabratec is encouraged for new STCs and may live alongside existing social networking platforms. STCs have received the membership base from IEEE Initiatives that have finished. 29-Nov-2016

13 How to get involved Join an STC: https://www.computer.org/web/stc
Go to and click on the logo of the STC you wish to join Interested in initiating a new STC? Click the New STC Application form Interested in Volunteering? Refer to the list of available positions and fill the form. 29-Nov-2016

14 Way forward The CS continues to need a nimble way to organize emerging technologies. STCs who want a conference that closely relate to a TC can align with the TC’s conference. STCs who want a conference different that the TCs can support are hosted by a general conference. STCs who are stable after X years are encouraged to apply to be TCs/Consortia, Special Initiatives and Future Directions. 29-Nov-2016
