3 Curriculum Modules 3-5 ELA
We are partnering NYSED is partnering with Expeditionary Learning to develop comprehensive materials in Grades 3-5 that progress across the school year and across the grades. NYSED is partnering with Public Consulting Group to develop comprehensive materials in Grades 6-12 that are aligned with those in Grades 3-5.

NYSED has published a series of exemplary units for use in secondary English language arts classrooms. These units model at each grade level: text selection, increasing complexity, supports for evidence-based conversations, and rigorous writing.

5 P-12 Mathematics NYSED is partnering with Common Core, Inc
to develop high quality, rigorous, and aligned materials in P-12 mathematics that progress across the school year and across the grades.

NYSED provided Common Core sample questions in Grades 3-8 ELA and math. Educators can use these teaching tools to: Better understand the shifts needed in classroom instruction; Better understand how student knowledge and skills will be assessed beginning in

NYSED provided an implementation workbook, including: Metrics, rubrics, and templates to support Common Core, Data Driven Instruction, and Teacher/Leader Effectiveness; Local/regional data on implementation status Educators can use this workbook to: Support district and regional strategic planning; Understand the quality and rigor of shifts in practice

You will need: Grade 3 and 8 Sample Items Grade K-3, 9 ELA and Math Standards

10 P-2 ELA Select one Sample Assessment Item from grade 3
With the grade 3 standards open in front of you, discuss that item and its annotation with your colleague. What is it measuring? What choices did the item writer make? Trace one of those measured standards backwards to grade 2, 1, K. What is happening in those grades in that same standards? What is the work of K-2 and how does it build? Focus now on 1st grade. Using the sample item in grade 3 as a model, how would you measure student knowledge/ skill in that standard in 1st grade. What are the therefores for instruction based on your analysis of this particular standard? Where are your therefores in the p-2 ela shifts as articulated by CK?

11 Back up the chain… Trace that same standard up to 8th grade. Look at the 8th grade sample items and see how it plays out in those questions. What are the instructional implications?
