1 Chapter 8 Retrieval-Improving Memory By: Ganette A. Chism

2 Do you remember people and situations from when you were 4 years old
Do you remember people and situations from when you were 4 years old? If so why do you think that was possible? Bell Ringer March 10 , 2016

3 Reasons why we forget……..
Forgetting is actually a common event in peoples lives.(For example: Forgetting someone's name) According to research people don’t actively review and rehearse the information. Sometimes you may be distracted when learning new information which could mean that you never truly retained the information long enough to remember it , information is often quickly forgotten if later.

4 The 3 theory’s There are 3 theories that different scientists have come up with to help us understand the possibilities on why we forget. They are : The interference theory The decay theory of forgetting The cue: dependent theory of forgetting

5 The Interference Theory
According o the interference theory, forgetting is the result of the different memories interfering with one another. For example: It is difficult to remember what happened on an average school day because so many other days have occurred since then.

6 The Decay Theory of forgetting
According to the trace theory of memory, the formation of new memories results in physical and chemical changes in the brain that result in a memory trace. Information in short term memory lasts approximately 15 to 30 seconds and if its not rehearsed the neurochemical memory trace quickly fades. If the time interval is short more information will be recalled. If a longer period of time passes more information will be forgotten and memory will be poorer.

7 The Cue- Dependent Theory Of Forgetting
Other researchers have suggested that information is present but cant be recalled without retrieval cues present.

8 Getting those memories back!

9 Getting that memory ! Retrieval is a process of accessing any stored memories you may have. Being able to retrieve your memory is important in your everyday life. For example: ( remembering where your class is at) There are 4 basic ways information can be pulled from your long term memory! -Recall -Recollection -Relearning -recognition

10 RECALL Being able to access the info without being cued.
( filling out a blank on a test )

11 Recollection Involves reconstructing memory, often utilizing logical structures, partial memories, narratives or clues (writing an answer on an essay involves remembering bits of info then reconstructing remaining information based on the martial memories.)

12 Recognition Involves identifying information after experiencing it again. (having you to recognize the right answer on a multiple choice quiz)

13 Relearning Involves relearning information that has been previously learned (rehab)

14 Now take out a utensil and complete this assignment based on slides 

15 EXIT SLIP !!! What are the 4 ways you can get that memory back
What are the two theories mentioned in the PowerPoint? Why do we forget(based off the slides)? What did you learn ? Explain. If not anything then tell me what do you know about memory and the retrieval of memory. How can this subject relate to your everyday life? (Provide examples)
