1 Director, Professor Stéphan CHEVALIER
Director, Professor Stéphan CHEVALIER Welcome to Tours, Thank you very much for taking the time to come to see us and to examine our scientific achievements and research program, we hope you will have an enjoyable day with us. Our laboratory is ideally located in this building on the site of the hospital and research laboratories specialized in health and medical sciences.

2 “Nutrition, Croissance et Cancer”
Initiated in UMR Inserm since 2002 Clinical and fundamental project at the intersection of the two fields of Nutrition and Cancer NUTRITIONAL LIPIDS, Adipose tissue, Tumors, Cell membranes Patentable lipids with specific modes of action Our lab was initiated at the end of the 80s and it became a inserm research unit in The research project is at the intersection of Nutrition and Cancer with an equilibrium between clinical and fundamental sciences investigations. The lab is well known for its findings on the impact of nutritional omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acid on breast cancer and metastases. We have been interested in identifying nutritional lipids from…and patentable lipids such as omega 3…..to improve…. to improve the efficacy of anticancer therapy and restrain tumor progression and to prevent metastasis occurrence and/or cancer cachexia 2

8 Major scientific areas of achievements from 2011 to 2016
Lipids in Nutrition & Cancer - Identified new targets (NaV1.5-NHE1, β4 subunit, P2X7, eNOS, PPARβ, PKCε/δ) and new mechanisms by which long chain n-3 PUFA reduce mammary tumor progression and improve response to anticancer treatments. Prevented bone metastases occurrence in pre-clinical models of mammary tumor with an ether- lipid targeting the SK3-Orai1 complex in lipid raft. we have identified 3 major areas of scientific achievements, we published in a number of international journals several original new targets and new mechanisms by which omega 3 fatty acids reduce mammary tumor progression and improve response to anticancer treatments. I won’t go in the details in this short overall presentation now, this will be described in the scientific presentations since this findings are the basis of the laboratory project for the coming years. We also managed to prevent……targeting specifically this ion channel complex. The third main scientific achievement is the demonstration… Demonstrated in a preclinical model that cancer cachexia provoked liver mitochondrial defects (energy metabolism) regulated by TNFα due to the accumulation of cardiolipins, and that it can be reversed by the inhibition of cardiolipin synthase.

9 6 Research contracts with private sector
Scientific production and valorization from January 2011 to June 2016 Contract Research FTEs Publications Publi > IF 5 24 84 23 2011-mid 2016 38 179 55 Other documents produced include 109 peer-reviewed medical publications (48 signed as first or last author) 18 PhD and 5 HDR viva, 107 non-PhD students trained (including 34 M2R) Annual budget for UMR1069 projects (not including salaries of permanent FTE and Clinical research projects) funding has tripled since 2011 with regional and national grants reaching 1.2 M€ in 2016 Our scientific production has increased dramatically in comparison to the previous contact from , The number of research FTE has increased by a third from 24 to 38 FTE including permanent, non-permanent staff and PhD students. This growth in research potential is mostly due to recruitment of permanent staff as I already mentioned, The number of pub of the lab has more than doubled from 84 on the previous contract to 179…..18 students were successful in obtaining their PhD, and 5 lab members obtained the HDR…The funding come from research contract obtained from…and 6… There were 4 clinical research projects piloted by lab members and two clinical studies you will hear about during Stephane servais’ scientific presentation 6 Research contracts with private sector CERB (Bourges), SMARTOX (Gieres), Key-Obs (Orléans), Atlantic Bone Screen (Nantes), Nutrialys (Rennes), Mitologics SAS (Paris)

The 6th “European Calcium Society” workshop “Calcium and Cell fate”, with 25 international speakers was organized in Tours in april 2015. Since 2011, organization of the Biomedical conferences of the University with 47 seminars including 18 given by international scientists. 88 posters and 52 oral communications presented by PhD students, 8 received poster prizes. 111 oral and 97 invited communications presented by UMR1069 members (other than students), 45 of which were presented in international meetings held outside of France. Finally, we have been very active in setting up international productive collaborations in Europe, oversea in USA and Canada and in north Africa… we pay a lot of attention that our students present their findings in conferences… over 200 oral or invited communications were given by permanent staff, a quarter of which in international meetings held outside of France.
