First generation IoT applications tend to be built for specific applications, using silo architectures to link dedicated devices, sensors and applications. In general, sensors and devices are managed via connected-device management platforms while the business rules for IoT-applications are supported by application-enablement platforms.
Future generation IoT applications will inter-operate across application silos. Open-horizontal platforms that support common services provide the architectural framework for any-to-any communications between devices, sensors and IoT-applications.
