2 1. Why do businesses need horizontal IoT platforms?
Agenda 1. Why do businesses need horizontal IoT platforms? IoT Platform #1 IoT Platform #2 2. Implementing a standards-based, interoperable horizontal test bed App1 App2 D Horizontal IoT Platform App1 App2 D © 2017 InterDigital, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

3 Why do businesses need horizontal platforms?
Devices, sensors and applications should interoperate, irrespective of underlying networking and protocol standards Conventional, Silo Architecture Standards-based, Interoperable Architecture Devices & sensors IoT Business Rules Device 1 Local Area Networks Wide Area Networks Sensor 1 Device 2 App 1 App 2 Common IoT-services (standards-based interoperability) Devices & sensors IoT Business Rules IoT “end-points” Device 1 Sensor 1 App 1 Device management platform Application enablement platform IoT-Service Enablers Local Area Networks Wide Area Networks Communications Silo solutions Constrains innovation envelope Vendor/Systems Integrator lock-in Interoperable solutions Service & business-model innovation Open eco-system (supplier choice) First generation IoT applications tend to be built for specific applications, using silo architectures to link dedicated devices, sensors and applications. In general, sensors and devices are managed via connected-device management platforms while the business rules for IoT-applications are supported by application-enablement platforms. Future generation IoT applications will inter-operate across application silos. Open-horizontal platforms that support common services provide the architectural framework for any-to-any communications between devices, sensors and IoT-applications. © 2017 InterDigital, Inc. 5 The benefits of IoT platform standardization
Vertical Silos Interconnected Silos Lower costs across the eco-system Impact on CapEx (reuse instead of re-invention) and OpEx (ease of maintenance) Allows developers to focus on Apps and not worry about underlying complexity Larger eco-system means more choices Mix-and-match across HW/SW vendors offering standards compliant products Avoid vendor lock-in Innovation from data sharing across verticals (interoperability) Source: oneM2M Release 2 webinar - © 2017 InterDigital, Inc.
