1 INTERNATIONAL NURSE MIGRATION
BY MONIKA JAKUBCOVA

2 SUMMARY Migration: „Movement of people to a new area or country in order to find work or better living conditions.“ People migrate for a variety of reasons: to escape oppressive political climates, to pursue better economic opportunities for themselves and their families, to better their education or those of their children, or even just for adventure. Why do a nurses migrate??

3 They have families, friends, known enviroment around, stable job position. But unfortunately, nurses are not happy in work in home country due to many reasons. The aim of my short research work was to find out what was the main reason of migration of my colleagues – nurses, who came from all over the word. I spoke to the the nurses of the same nationality as well. I found that a lot of addressed had problem to answer truthfully but the main reason for migration was the same in all nationalities - dissatisfaction with salaries.

4 SO WHAT/PROBLEMS?? The problems become, when the number of migrating nurses grows up until the countries have to face up to problem with nurses shortage in hospitals and whole health care system starts to have problems too. Ratio patient:nurse increases and it can lead to serious consequences. Example: If the nurse who takes care of 3 patients normally has to take care of 6 patients now, due to nursers shortage in hospital, what care does the nurse give to the patient??

5 The nurses will become more tired, there is more stress and pressure on the nurses head and its very easy to make serious mistakes in given health care. (For example, mixing medications, giving wrong/high alert medications, not enough proper time for patient, not enough time for education of patiens and families, not appropriate assessment of patient etc.)

6 METHODS Used quantitative method: questionnaire with 15 simple questions, where I tried to find out: how many times my colleagues migrated, how many years they work abroad, if they want to come back and work again in home country and the most, what was the main reason to leave. Questionnaire given to my 50 colleagues of different nationalities, 48 was returned.

7 RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS  Marital status does not fulfill role in nurses migration: 44% - single 48% - married 8% - divorced Nurses migrate abroad because of work for a few years, not forever (How many years have you been working in Saudi Arabia?) 5 years - 54% years - 36% 10 and more – 10%  (How much longer are you planning to stay working abroad?) 0-5 years – 77% 5-10 years – 15% 10 and more – 8% Nurses migrate mostly just once (Have you worked abroad before?) 21% - YES 79% - NO

8 90% of nurses: better salary, more benefits etc.
The main reason to migrate is dissatisfaction with situation in home coutry 90% of nurses: better salary, more benefits etc. 4%: to meet new people 2%: to get different work experiencies 2%: to see different culture 2%: religion Nurses are happier and more satisfied abroad (Did you meet your expectations?) 73% - YES % - NO Nurses want to come back to home country (Are you planning to come back home and to work as a nurse again? ) 65% - YES 35% - NO

9 (Did any hospital offer you a job in your country recently ?)
Situation in health care system has been changing in other countries too (Have the conditions for nurses of your country changed during the period while you are working abroad?( 52% - YES 48% - NO Government do not do too much to get nurses back to home country (Did any hospital offer you a job in your country recently ?) 37.5% - YES %- NO Possible solutions to solve coming problems done by nurses migration could be, if the nurses start to feel more support from home country. More support regarding education, benefits, salary, new working enviroment, more motivation of the nurses and even students of nursing.

11 CONCLUSION Nurses will be still migrating until they will be happier in home country As DR Kingma says: “Nurse migration would not be such a big issue if there wasn’t a nursing shortage.” “Migration is and will continue to be a part of our lives, especially with increasing globalization. If we deal with the need to migrate, we’ll address the nursing shortage, and migration will not be an issue, it will be an enrichment. “

12 THANK YOU !!
