2. I. Parts of a Eukaryotic Cell
A. The Cell Membrane (Plasma Membrane)*
Made of a bilayer of fat (phospholipids) with embedded proteins throughout
Separates the inside and outside of the cell

3. Controls the transport of materials into and out of the cell
Recognizes and responds to signals from other cells

4. B. The Nucleus
Controls and coordinates the activities of the cell
Stores the cell’s DNA
DNA carries the instructions for making proteins

5. During cell division, chromatin condenses into packages called chromosomes

6. C. The Cytoplasm*
The region between the nucleus and the cell membrane
Filled with a jelly-like substance where many of the cell’s chemical reactions take place

7. D. Ribosomes*
Tiny structures that synthesize protein
Following the instructions in DNA
Float in cytoplasm or found attached to the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)

8. E. Mitochondria
Site of cellular respiration
Contains its own DNA
G. Chloroplast – Plant Cells Only
Site of photosynthesis
Contains its own DNA

9. F. Vacuoles
Storage sacs within the cytoplasm
Contain either waste, water, or nutrients
Plant cells have large central vacuoles

10. Some organisms have contractile vacuoles that pump excess water out of the cell

11. H. Cell Wall – Plant Cells Only
Provides extra support for plant cells
Made of cellulose

12. H. Other Organelles Endoplasmic Reticulum: passageway through cell
Rough ER: covered in ribosomes; modifies proteins
Smooth ER: synthesizes lipids

13. Golgi Body: packages and sends materials from the ER out of the cell

14. Cytoskeleton: gives the cell its shape and helps it move
Cilia: small hairs on surface of cell
Flagella: long tail on surface of cell

15. Lysosome – Animal Cells Only: digests substances in the cell
Example: old organelles that need to be recycled

16. Centrioles – Animal Cells Only: helps the cell divide
